PLM Systems for Industrial Products

Key Takeaways

  • PTC's PLM system solution drives strategic collaboration between product stakeholders/teams of all kinds and customers/partners by leveraging trusted, up-to-date product information.
  • Siemens offers a portfolio of PLM systems products called Xcelerator, a combination of Siemens' Digital Industries Software portfolio with its integrated tools that "connects current and future information technology, operational technology, and engineering technology environments.
  • Dassault Systemes offers a portfolio of about 12 PLM solutions which consists of 3D modeling applications, simulation applications creating virtual twins of products or production systems, social and collaborative applications, and information intelligence applications.
  • SAP offers a portfolio of PLM systems solutions increase the speed of process operations, profitability, quality, and compliance by linking the supply chain with product lifecycle management software.

Introduction

We have identified additional two competitors to PTC, Siemens, Dassault Systemes, and Cenit. They are SAP and Oracle. Furthermore, we also completed a competitive analysis of these competitors, including a description of their PLM system offerings and capabilities, target market, competitive advantage, use cases, and brief summaries/links to case studies provided by each competitor. This information can be accessed from the attached spreadsheet. More information on the summary of our findings and research strategy, including how we determined SAP and Oracle as additional competitors, have been provided below.

Summary of the Findings

  • PTC's PLM system solution drives strategic collaboration between product stakeholders/teams of all kinds and customers/partners by leveraging trusted, up-to-date product information. The capabilities of the PLM system include bill of materials (BOM) management, collaborative product management, manufacturing process management, product data management, product variability management, supply chain collaboration, quality management, and model-based systems engineering, among others.
  • Siemens offers a portfolio of PLM systems products called Xcelerator, a combination of Siemens' Digital Industries Software portfolio with its integrated tools that "connects current and future information technology, operational technology, and engineering technology environments. This technology empowers companies to easily build, integrate, and extend their existing data and network systems." Some of the constituent products include Teamcenter, a solution that connects people and processes; PLM Components, a 3D software development toolkit; Polarion, a unified application lifecycle management; Mendix, a scalable low-code application development platform; among others.
  • Called the 3DEXPERIENCE portfolio, Dassault Systemes offers a portfolio of about 12 PLM solutions which consists of 3D modeling applications, simulation applications creating virtual twins of products or production systems, social and collaborative applications, and information intelligence applications. They include CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, ENOVIA, SIMULIA, Centric PLM, among others.
  • Cenit provides a digitally integrated PLM solution based on standard products from Dassault Systèmes and SAP in conjunction with innovative, industry-specific Cenit solutions.
  • SAP offers a portfolio of PLM systems solutions including SAP Portfolio and Project Management, SAP Product Lifecycle Costing, SAP Engineering Control Center, SAP Enterprise Product Development, SAP Teamcenter by Siemens, and SAP S/4HANA for product compliance. These solutions increase the speed of process operations, profitability, quality, and compliance by linking the supply chain with product lifecycle management software.
  • "Oracle Cloud PLM accelerates innovation and new product introductions by efficiently managing items, parts, products, documents, requirements, engineering change orders, and quality workflows across globalized supply chains while seamlessly integrating to computer-aided design (CAD) systems."

Research Strategy

For this research, we first determined additional two competitors to the PLM systems vendors requested. The competitors are SAP and Oracle. They have been determined as competitors because PTC, one of the leaders in the PLM space, identified them as its competitors. Furthermore, other credible research and industry resources, such as the CIO, EM 360 Tech, and 360 Quadrants, corroborated the information. Additionally, we reviewed them and found that they are similar to PTC, Siemens, Dassault Systems, and Cenit, in terms of PLM offering, size, or scale. Finally, we primarily leveraged information obtained from the company websites, annual reports, and other third-party sources to complete the competitive analysis of all competitors, including a description of their PLM system offerings and capabilities, target market, competitive advantage, use cases, and brief summaries/links to case studies provided by each competitor.
