Please provide me with number of TOEFL test-takers in Russia and Ukraine (separately!!!) in 2015/2016
Hello and thank you for your question in regards to the number of TOEFL test-takers in Russia and Ukraine in 2015/2016. In short, after extensive search through a variety of sources, the number of TOEFL test-takers is not available. However, there were 3,454 TOEFL test-takers in Russia in 2005/2006, and 1,251 in Ukraine. Russia scores a higher total average in TOEFL tests than Ukraine at 87.
METHODOLOGY
After extensively researching through both authoritative and non-authoritative sites to determine the number of TOEFL test-takers in 2015/2016, I have found that TOEFL does not disclose this number. I have continued to research in an effort to find any data that can be used to perform back of the envelope calculations to calculate the number of test-takers; however, relevant data that can used for calculations such as revenue or average number of students purchasing products or sitting on exams is, unfortunately, not made available. I have searched through sources such as the TOEFL website and annual reports, ETS reports, and new publications. Nonetheless, I was able to find the number of test-takers in both countries in 2005/2006, the number of cities the test is offered, and the average scores achieved by examinees in Russia and Ukraine.
FINDINGS
More than 30 million people over the world have taken the TOEFL test and it remains to be the most available English test worldwide. In 2005/2006, there were 3,454 TOEFL test-takers in Russia. During the same year, there were 1,251 test-takers in Ukraine. However, according to extensive research and an article by the Chronicle of Higher Education, TOEFL no longer discloses the number of test-takers nor the profit accrued each year.
Nevertheless, in Russia, TOEFL tests are offered in 29 cities and locations for a fee US$260, while it is offered in 10 cities in Ukraine for a fee of US$180. It is undisclosed how many people sit in each of the test sessions.
The average scores achieved by TOEFL test-takers in Russia is 21 in reading, 22 in listening, 22 in speaking, and 21 in writing for a total of 87. In Ukraine, the average is 19 in reading, 21 in listening, 22 in speaking, and 20 in writing for a total of 83. As such, test-takers in Russia tend to score a higher total on average for TOEFL exams.
In terms of learning English, the economic crisis in Russia is motivating more people to learn English. The country is ranking as the 10th biggest country in the world for online learning of languages. The language learning industry in the country has reached US$450 million in 2015. Demand for speaking the language is also growing in Ukraine as 2016 was announced to be the year for the English Language with an aim to intensify English learning in the country.
