Please provide a list of the top 1000 Amazon sellers ordered by revenue.
Hello! Thank you for your question about the top sellers on amazon based on revenue. The short version is that, after extensive research through information provided directly by Amazon and news articles reporting on third party sellers on Amazons, I've determined that the information you requested is not currently available because Amazon does not release a list of third party sellers ranked by revenue. However, I was able to learn that third party sellers sell 50% of all sold items on Amazon. Below you will find a deep dive of my research and methodology.
METHODOLOGY
I started my search trying to find information about third party sellers' revenue from Amazon. Amazon does not release this information publicly. Instead, they track sellers via reviews.
I continued my search for the third party sellers with the highest revenue by searching news articles with a focus on publications that specialized in business. I discovered several publications that discuss revenue earned by third party sellers more generically.
I located articles that discussed specific sellers and surveys of web retailers. I was not able to locate enough information to do basic calculations to guesstimate third party sellers revenue, but I did find relevant information to this topic and discuss my findings below.
HELPFUL FINDINGS
While I wasn't able to locate the specific top sellers by revenue on Amazon, I was able to locate some related information.
Amazon has reported that they have over 2 million third party sellers selling through them. It is reported that the annual sales for third party sellers in total is $132 billion. In the third quarter of 2016, third party sellers sold 50% of all paid units on Amazon.
Web Retailer did a survey in 2016 of 1500 Amazon third party sellers. It is reported that 2% of third party sellers average $10 million or more in annual sales. Another 13% average $1 million to $10 million in annual sales while 36% average $100,000 to $1 million in annual sales. The remaining 49% average less than 100,000 in annual sales.
The two most popular product categories for sellers averaging over $1 million was Home & Kitchen and Electronics with 16% and 12% respectively.
In February 2016, Slate interviewed a large third part seller. Pharmapacks told Slate that they made $70 million in 2015 and were on track to make between $140 to $160 million in 2016.
While you were not interested in a rankings based on reviews, I did check where Pharmapacks ranked. In April 2016, Pharmapacks was ranked 7th on a 12 month list of most reviews globally on Amazon. Amazon reports that only 10% to 20% of all transactions receive feedback from customers. This makes it impossible to accurately extrapolate sales based on feedback.
POSSIBLE CONTINUED RESEARCH
In understanding what types of information are and are not publicly available on this topic, I’ve suggested a few other routes you may be interested in researching:
- Given that third party sellers are 50% of all units sold, you could look into future trends on how much of the Amazon marketplace will be third party sellers going forward.
- Given that 15% of all third party sellers make over $1 million, you may be interested in researching what sets those sellers apart from others.
CONCLUSION
To wrap up, after searching information from Amazon as well as articles relating to Amazon, I discovered that Amazon does not release third party seller revenue rankings. However, I did learn that third party sellers are a significant portion of the units sold on Amazon. If you'd like to continue researching any of the topics that I outlined above, please let us know!
