Please provide me with global revenue for the following brands: Clean and Clear, Neutrogena, Cetaphil, and Cerave
Hi there, and thank you for giving us another chance at responding your request for the global revenue of Clean and Clear, Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Cerave.
In short, revenue specific for Clean and Clear, Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Cerave is not publicly disclosed because its parent companies do not breakdown their revenue to that level of detail.
However, I was able to calculate a range of revenue for each brand, which I have provided in rows 9 to 12, columns B and C, of the attached spreadsheet.
Please see below for notes on my methodology and findings.
METHODOLOGY & NOTES
In order to answer your query, I first looked up the official financial statements of each requested brand or their parent company, as well as researched business databases like Owler, Hoovers and Manta and looked for articles on these brands on business media like Fortune.
All of the requested brands belong to a parent company - Clean and Clear and Neutrogena belong to Johnson & Johnson, Cetaphil belongs to Galderma (which in turn belongs to Nestlé) and Cerave belongs to Valeant (though in January 2017 it was sold to L'Oréal). Therefore, the revenue of each brand is included in the parent company's earnings - and none of them breakdown their revenues to show the contribution of each of the brands.
Then, I turned to databases - like Owler, Hoovers, Manta and Statista. Hoovers and Manta did not list the revenue (or estimates) for any of the brands. Owler provided an estimate for Neutrogena, Cerave and Cetaphil, for which I looked for a second source to back it up - but was unable to find one. Official numbers are not available, and the other information I found conflicted with these initial figures.
A Galderma executive lists a different revenue for Cetaphil, which I also provide. For Neutrogena, I was able to calculate the percentage of total Johnson & Johnson's revenue that is brought in by skincare brands - but this figure includes other brands aside from Neutrogena, including Clean and Clear. For Cerave, I was unable to find figures other than a combined revenue with AcneFree and Ambi listed in an article by Fortune.
As for Clean and Clear, the only figure I found was from a graph by Statista, which included numbers for several skincare brands in the US alone. Other than that, I found no specific numbers (besides the fact that Clean and Clear's revenue is contained in the percentage of Johnson & Johnson's revenue that comes from skincare brands).
I finally resolved to provide you with estimated revenue range for each brand - though keep in mind that the highest estimates may include revenue from other brands, as is the case from Clean and Clear, Cerave and Neutrogena, and it is provided as an absolute maximum potential revenue. These ranges are estimations, and should be taken as such.
I elaborate on my calculations and estimations for each of them below.
CLEAN AND CLEAR
Clean and Clear is a brand of umbrella company Johnson & Johnson. According to numbers cited by Statista, skincare products represented 5.21% of total revenue of Johnson & Johnson in 2016, which reached US$71.9 billion - this would bring skincare revenue to US$3.75 billion.
Keep in mind that this figure includes other skincare brands that also belong to Johnson & Johnson, notably Neutrogena and Aveeno, as well as others that are not disclosed.
The only figure exclusive to Clean and Clear that is publicly available is sales for the US in 2015, provided by Statista - which reached US$29.5 million.
NEUTROGENA
Like Clean and Clear, Neutrogena is a brand of umbrella company Johnson & Johnson. Similarly, Neutrogena's revenue has contributed to the US$3.75 billion brought in for Johnson & Johnson by skincare brands - together with Aveeno and other non-disclosed brands, including Clean and Clear.
According to Owler, Neutrogena alone has an annual revenue of US$261 million. Statista also recognizes it as the top skincare brand in the US, where it made US$95.6 million in 2015.
CETAPHIL
Cetaphil is a skincare brand from Galderma, a Switzerland-based pharmaceutical company that is fully owned by Nestlé since 2014, and is now part of Nestlé Skin Health. According to Owler, Cetaphil has an annual revenue of US$13.7 million. Hoovers or Manta do not provide with an estimation.
However, Galderma project manager Glynnis Paterson claims that Cetaphil has over US$250 million in annual revenue.
CERAVE
Currently a part of Valeant, Cerave is one of three skincare brands (the other two being AcneFree and Ambi) acquired by L'Oréal in January 2017. In Fortune article it was disclosed that the three brands together earn US$163 million.
As for Cerave alone, Owler estimates it earns US$5 million annually. Hoovers or Manta do not provide with an estimation.
CONCLUSION
To wrap up, revenue specific for Clean and Clear, Neutrogena, Cetaphil and Cerave is not publicly disclosed because its parent companies do not breakdown their revenue to that level of detail.
