Please help me understand the STEMI vs. NSTEMI disease burden for those with ACS in the US. How many are hospitalized with STEMI and NSTEMI heart attacks each year in the US?

Although there are no direct statistics for NSTEMI/STEMI hospitalizations, I have triangulated the available information to estimate that there were 152,199 hospital stays due to STEMI and 456,596 due to NSTEMI in 2014. For 2015, the estimated figures are 157,239 for STEMI and 471,718 for NSTEMI.
There were two main calculations needed to generate this estimate. Firstly, the amount of people hospitalized by heart attacks in the United States in 2014 and 2015. Then, the proportions of these hospitalizations that are likely to have caused by NSTEMI and STEMI. There is no data available beyond 2015.

Amount of U.S hospitalizations caused by heart attacks in 2014 and 2015.

There were 608,795 U.S hospital stays for heart attacks in 2014. There is no official figure for 2015, but we do know there were 196 hospital stays for every 100,000 people in the U.S in 2015. The U.S census states that the population was 320,896,618 in 2015, so we can estimate the number of hospital stays for heart attacks in 2015 at 628,957.

Proportion of heart attacks due to STEMI or NSTEMI

A study of heart attack hospitalizations between 2006 and 2008 stated that 45.7% were due to STEMI and 54.3% were due to NSTEMI. However, we can’t assume that these percentages are accurate in 2014-2015, as the proportion of NSTEMI heart attacks has been increasing over time.

In 1990, 14.2% of all heart attacks were NSTEMI. In 2006, it had risen to 59.1%, and in 2011 it was reported to be 68.6%. By plotting these years and percentages on a graph and assuming a roughly linear progression, we can estimate the percentage in 2014-2015 would be around 75%.

Conclusion

Assuming the percentages of NSTEMI heart attacks is 75%, the number of hospital stays due to NSTEMI in 2014 is 456,596. The number of hospital stays in 2015 due to NSTEMI is 471,718.
Assuming the percentages of STEMI heart attacks is 25%, the number of hospital stays due to STEMI in 2014 is 152,199. The number of hospital stays due to STEMI in 2015 is 157,239.
