What percentage of IT jobs are filled by job or resume postings?
Hello,
Thank you for your question on the percentage of IT jobs filled by job or resume posting. The short version is that 80% of jobs are filled through networking( both online as well as in person and 15% of the jobs are filled through job boards.
The most useful resources that helped me in this research are articles from Recruiting Blogs, Money US News and OnRec.
Below you can find a deep dive in to my findings.
METHODOLOGY
Though I extensively searched various resources to find specific information on IT jobs filled by job postings, I was unable to find any useful information on the same. However, we have been able to find information on the general recruitment scene. We were not able to find any resource which states that the general recruitment scene is not applicable to the IT sector and hence, we have used these resources for this research.
OVERVIEW
As per Recruiter Nation study by Jobvite, 56% of recruiters acquire new employee through social network, 55% through intern hires, 46% through direct applications, 38% through outside recruiters, 37% through internet job boards and 19% through their own mobile career sites.
Researches and surveys are indicating the importance of networking and social media channels in filling jobs, with only 15% of jobs being filled through job boards.
When it comes to IT sector, the unemployment rate was found to be 2.4% as of August 2016 with average job vacancy of 26.6 days.
IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING
According to a report from ABC News, 80% of today’s jobs are landed through networking. Studies suggest that personal networking and online networking yields better results than spending time on job sites like Monster.com, Indeed.com, Dice.com or CareerBuilder.com.
Companies try first to hire internally, failing which they rely on referrals through employees. This means that that by networking with the employees, one tend to know about vacancies before the job is posted on their website or any job sites. It isn't just business networking opportunities that help, but network of former colleagues, friends, relatives and acquaintances play an important role in the filling jobs.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The use of social media for job recruitment has grown 54% in the past 5 years. Now, 84% of organisations are recruiting on social media while only 56% of companies were hiring on social media in 2011.
Survey conducted by Jobvite showed that 73% of recruiters have hired through social media, out of which 79% of candidates were obtained through LinkedIn. The professional features and job board functionality make LinkedIn the preferred choice for social recruiting. 93% of recruiters also said that they review a candidate's social profile including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter before making the decision to hire.
JOB BOARD
Only 15% of jobs are filled in the US through job boards. Out of them, Software Advice's study has found that Indeed has the highest quality of candidates in entry level positions, followed by Career Builder and Craiglist. For senior positions, LinkedIn was found to be the best source followed by CareerBuilder and Monster.
CONCLUSION
80% of today's jobs are filled by networking ( both online and in person) and only 15% of the jobs are filled through job boards. Social media plays an important role in the recruitment process, both to find the right candidates as well as to understand about a person's social profile and activities.
