How many people watch golf in europe? how many play? how many do both?

In order to determine the numbers of people interested in golf in Europe, and the number who play, watch, or both, information had to be triangulated from reliable sources. It can be assumed that the total number of people across Europe who have an interest in the sport, is 65.8 million. Of those people, 54 million watch golf, and 20.9 million play golf, with 4.15 million of these players being registered golfers. This suggests that approximately 9.1 million people both play and watch golf.

Estimated number of people interested in Golf:

Repucom (now a part of Nielson Sports) published their most recent World Golf report in 2015. This report features information gathered from a survey of the global golf community. Repucom reported on numbers of people interested in the sport globally; in order to determine an estimate for the number of people who have an interest in golf across Europe, figures from listed European countries had to be combined:

UK: 12.3 million
Turkey: 9.6 million
Germany: 8.8 million
Italy 8.3 million
Russia: 7.9 million
France: 7.4 million
Spain: 5.7 million
Poland: 2.7 million
Netherlands: 1.1 million
Austria: less than 1 million (averaged to 1 million)
Sweden: less than 1 million (averaged to 1 million)

By combining these figures, an estimated number of people across Europe who have an interest in golf (this does not necessarily mean they play golf) is 65.8 million.

Estimated number of people who play golf:

According to the 2017 report on European Golf Statistics compiled by the European Golf Course Owners Association, the total number of registered golfers across Europe for the 2016 period was just over 4.15 million. This number does not include casual golfers who are not registered.

There are no exact figures available for the number of casual golfers within Europe, but a total number of golf players can be triangulated:

An Eurobarometer Report on Sport and Physical Activity published in 2014 states that 41% of Europeans exercise or play sport at least once a week. The population of Europe, as reported by Worldometers, is currently over 742 million. By assuming the percentage of people who play sport at least once a week has not changed dramatically since, 2014, it can be calculated that approximately 304 million people across Europe participate in some form of sport (742 million x 41%).

According to the Repucom report from 2015, 6.9% of people who participate in sport in the UK, play golf. If we assume that this percentage is similar to the percentage of people across Europe who play golf (out of the total number of people who participate in some sport), we can determine that the total number of people who play golf across Europe is about 20.9 million (304 million x 6.9%).

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO WATCH GOLF:

In America, a Forbes article published in January 2017 claims that NBC attracted 71 million viewers for its 2016 golf season coverage, while CBS saw 63 million, and FOX received 34 million viewers. An average viewing audience for golf in America can be assumed to be 56 million viewers (71 million + 63 million + 34 million /3).

According to the Repucom report from 2015, America has approximately 68 million people who have an interest in golf.
By using the average number of American golf viewers (56 million) and the number of American's who have an interest in golf (68 million), it can be calculated that approximately 82% of those interested in golf in America also watch it. [(56 million x 100) / (68 million)].
By making the assumption that a similar percentage of people (82%) in Europe who have an interest in golf (65.8 million) also watch it, it can be estimated that 54 million people watch golf across Europe (65.8 million x 82%).

Conclusion:

By triangulating available data, it can be estimated that there are around 65.8 million people across Europe who have an interest in golf. Of these people, approximately 54 million people watch golf, and 20.9 million play golf in some form. This ultimately means that there is an overlap of 9.1 million golfing fans who both play and watch golf (54 million + 20.9 million - 65.8 million).
