How many people play tennis in europe? how many people watch tennis in europe? what is the overlap?

Around 26,295,228 people in Europe play Tennis and around 17 Million people watch Tennis in Europe. There was not much of an overlap for Tennis Players and Watchers in Europe, as the average player age was 32, whereas the average watcher was 55-61.

Tennis players in Europe

The number of Tennis Players in Europe can be broken down into 2 categories: Licensed Players and Recreational Players. The numbers for that added together is where I got the total number of Tennis Players in Europe, 21,347,857 Recreational Players and 4,647,371 Licensed Players. This total of 26,295,228 Tennis Players is, when calculated, 3.1% of the population of Europe which is 847,803,496 currently.

ASSUMPTION: If the player ages in Europe and America are similar, if not the same, then the average age of Tennis Players is 32 years old.

Tennis Viewers

The number of people watching Tennis in Europe was a bit trickier to find compared to Tennis Players. To determine an average TV viewer amount I added 2 major Tennis event TV viewers and discovered an average. There was 11 Million viewers from Europe for the Australian Open and 24.1 Million for Wimbledon both in 2016. This average came out as 23,050,000 (2.7% of Europe which was found using the population in this chart) for TV and Internet streaming of Tennis whereas the averages out at 320,068 Tennis viewers at live attendance. I got this figure by finding the average of 4 different Tennis events, The Tennis European Junior Tour (250,000), The Laver Cup (83,273), Wimbledon 2105 (484,000) and The French Open 2105 (463,000).

Overlap

Finding the data for the overlap was quite difficult as there wasn't much for Europe for but if we make 2 assumptions we manage to find an answer.

ASSUMPTION #1 : Europeans and Americans are similar, if not the same, when it comes to Tennis

ASSUMPTION #2 : People over the average age of Tennis Players don't play Tennis

With this in mind we find that the average age of a Tennis player is 32, for both men and women whereas the average viewing age is 55-61. This is quite a big jump in age between Tennis players and Tennis viewers which jumps by at least 23 years minimum, which in physical sport makes a difference. So there is too few or no Tennis players that watch Tennis or Tennis viewers that play Tennis to get actual numbers along with no solid source of information to get strong numbers from.

Conclusion

To wrap it up, there are around 23,370,068 people viewing Tennis in Europe, around 26,295,228 people playing Tennis in Europe and no numbers available for the amount of people who both play Tennis and watch it in Europe. Thanks for using Wonder! Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
