Opti - Target Audience

The total addressable market of Opti's target audience is 136,416. The five main company segments that Opti targets or focuses on include municipalities that use CSS, government agencies in charge of watershed protection, green infrastructure projects, publicly owned treatment works, and flood control/environment engineering firms. Below are our research strategy and deep findings.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To determine the five main company segments for Opti, we began our search by looking through some completed projects done by the company. This gave us a better understanding of the types of entities they have worked with in the past and insights where they are aiming to take their business. Afterward, we expanded our research by going through environmental and government databases, such as the EPA, to learn more about other industries involved in the stormwater and wastewater field. By comparing this data to the project examples from Opti's website, we were able to compile a list of five segments that the company is targeting.

AMERICAN MUNICIPALITIES THAT USE A CSS

CSS, or Combined Sewage Systems, is an outdated urban system that collects runoff, sewage, and wastewater into one pipe, while CSOs, or Combined Sewage Overflows, hold partially or wholly untreated waste that is prone to overflowing during storms, directly impacting the public's health and safety. Opti aims to use its technology to enable cities to be more proactive when it comes to preventing an overflow from a CSS. Currently, there are 860 municipalities within the US that use combined sewage.

STATE/CITY GOVERNMENTAL DEPARTMENTS IN CHARGE OF WATERSHEDS

According to NOAA, a watershed is an area that directs rainwater and snowmelt to drainage points, such as the ocean and lakes. As the water flows, it picks up pollutants which are carried back into the water supply, this is, if a watershed contains "impervious surfaces", such as roads, the polluted water can run directly into storm drains, causing them to overflow. There are thousands of delinted watersheds within the US, and their boundaries are determined by the local and state government for urban planning purposes. One of Opti's main mission goals is to prevent polluted stormwater from draining back into the public's water supply. With 48 states taking part in the EPA's Preliminary Healthy Watersheds Assessments, Opti would be able to work with these state agencies to secure America's watersheds.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Green infrastructure is a more nature-based approach to America's water impact problems, including stormwater runoff pollution. A survey from the BLS found that there are approximately 120,000 government and private companies that provide some type of green infrastructure service. Opti's projects have incorporated green infrastructure into their objectives in the past. With the growing number of private and public organizations seeking to protect the environment, this segment will continue to grow.

PUBLICLY OWNED TREATMENT WORKS

Since the 1970s, American wastewater has largely been treated by POTWs. Most of these plants are in desperate need of upgrading because they are deteriorating, making it difficult to effectively manage and treat wastewater. There are approximately 14,748 POTWs operating within the US. As per Opti's goal of upgrading the nation's current water management systems, approaching this segment that works directly with wastewater from runoff could prove helpful.

FLOOD CONTROL/ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING FIRMS

Climate changes have resulted in more widespread flooding across the US, overwhelming the nation's already outdated water management plants. Private and government-funded organizations have been creating new technologies to protect the communities from potential flooding. There are 760 environmental engineering firms in the US. Opti seeks to prevent flooding, especially within urbanized areas. Flood control/environmental engineering firms are often on the front line to prevent flooding from happening.

CALCULATIONS

Therefore, the total addressable market of Opti's target audience is:
CSS (860) + Watershed (48) + Green Infrastructure (120,000) + POTWs (14,748) + Firms (760) = 136,416
