How many operative ambulatory centers and hospitals with associated operating rooms are there in the US?

In the U.S., there are approximately 6,500 ambulatory surgical centers as of 2017, with roughly 16,000 operating rooms. That's out of the more than 200,000 operating rooms in the country. Of those ASCs, an estimated 60% are independent, 20% are hospital owned or affiliated, and 20% are owned by a large company. That means there are approximately 1,300 hospital-affiliated ASCs in the U.S. You'll find all the details of my research below.

INSIGHTS

According to a 2017 report from Dun & Bradstreet, there are approximately 6,500 ambulatory surgical centers in the United States, and 16,000 operating rooms in these centers. The combined revenue of these centers is $24 billion. Roughly 46% of surgeries in the U.S. are performed in these centers. The average size of these centers is 15,262 square feet, and a typical ASC has three to four operating rooms. The ASC industry is expected to grow by 2.4% CAGR through 2022.

According to this report, 60% of ambulatory surgical centers are independent, 20% are owned by or affiliated with hospitals, and another 20% are owned by a larger company. This means that, of the total 6,500 ASC in the U.S., 1,300 (20% of 6,500) are hospital affiliated, while 3,900 (60%) are independent.

According to an iDataReasearch study, there are 60,000 integrated operating rooms in the United States. This represents approximately 27% of all operating rooms, based on the CAGR of integrated operating rooms from 2013 until now. To calculate the approximate total number of operating rooms, we can divide 60,000 by 0.27 to get 222,222. So, we can say there are approximately 206,222 (222,222 - 16,000) hospital operating rooms and 16,000 ASC operating rooms in the United States.
Among those ambulatory surgical centers operated by a larger company, there are a few key players with significant shares of the market. They are:

USPI/Tenet: 450 centers
AmSurg: 260 centers
Surgical Care Affiliates: 205 centers
Hospital Corporation of America: 117 centers
SurgCenter Development: 107 centers
Surgery Partners: 96 centers
