Best Practices

The best practices for marketing the services of management consulting firms should both increase the firm's visibility to clients while establishing confidence and credibility. Firms can do this best when taking steps to ensure that potential clients are aware of them and have a positive view of their brand before even being approached. They can do this by establishing a solid Internet presence while taking steps to demonstrate their expertise through various channels. Networking and establishing relationships are the bread and butter of business development in the consulting world. However, establishing visibility and credibility is the foundation. "[A] majority of buyers of consulting services will search online and read an article or blog post. After that, the next most likely method is to download a piece of content or listen to an expert speak about the topic."

Internet Presence and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

  • "[T]oday’s buyers have already researched their business challenges online long before they attend a conference."
  • Optimize SEO and search engine marketing.
  • The first step should be to create an informative website to demonstrate expertise.
  • To varying degrees, the firms (linked to) above have made this a priority. Each of their websites contain layers of detail covering their services.
  • A Google search of "operations consultant," returns first page results that include Accenture, EY and McKinsey - and Hackett on the second page of results.

Thought Leadership: Establishing Expertise

  • Create in-depth, thoughtful content for free. "[T]hought leadership may not earn significant short-term value, but in the long-term, it can cement a firm’s reputation and legitimacy."
  • Thought leadership is the process of establishing a relationship with your customers and stakeholders and delivering something of value to them. During this process, you go beyond simply selling a service or product and establish your brand as the expert in the field, differentiating yourself from the competitors.”
  • Thought leadership can be viewed a loss-leader. In a way, valuable services are being giving away today to better attract clients and future income.
  • "This is where today’s professionals can add their expertise, develop business and build a personal brand."
  • There are many examples of this. Each of the consulting firms detailed (and linked to) above provide dozens of articles and insights free of charge.
  • Many of the firms detailed (and linked to) above highlight a portal to media coverage where their experts are giving their opinions in various media formats, including newspaper and magazine articles as well as video.

Research Strategy

We first scoured each competitors' websites to determine they're approach to marketing their operating management consulting services, also looking at SEC filings where available. Beyond a search of periodicals of both the companies in question and industry best practices, management associations and conference events were also investigated.
