Online magazine subscription numbers for teenage girls in or out of Australia

Hello! Thanks for your question about the number of teenage girls who subscribe to online magazines in and out of Australia. The short version is that roughly 41,871 digital magazine readers in Australia are teenage girls, and there are around 3.1 million. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.

METHODOLOGY
Firm numbers on digital readership amongst Australian teenage girls was extremely difficult to find. The majority of statistics gathered by large data handlers such as the Alliance for Audited Media and Nielsen were locked behind paywalls. However, I was able to triangulate a rough figure using overall magazine readers in Australia, then calculate out the percentage of those who were under 25, (as surveys did not poll readers who were under the age of 18). From those numbers, I calculated out the percent that were female.

For the total number of global teenage girl readers outside of Australia, I took the number of total readers, calculated the percentage that were female and under 25, then subtracted the total number of Australian teenage girl readers.

For the purposes of this research, I assumed "readers" to equate to people who subscribed or purchased digital magazines. The online surveys did not differentiate between purchasers who bought one issue of a magazine versus those who subscribed. The closest statistic I found indicated that 19% of magazine revenue in 2014 came from paid subscriptions.

READER DATA FOR AUSTRALIAN TEEN GIRLS
Roy Morgan states that 12.6 million Australians read magazines. The New York Times states that 3.3% of magazine circulation can be ascribed to digital editions. Assuming each reader reads one magazine in one format, this means that roughly 415,800 (12.6 million * 3.3%) Australians are reading digital magazines.

Magazine.org states that 19% of all magazine readers are under 25, and 53% are female. Assuming this holds true for digital content, roughly 41,871 (415,800 * 19% * 53%) digital magazine readers in Australia are teenage girls.

READER DATA FOR NON-AUSTRALIAN TEEN GIRLS
Magazine.org published a recent survey of print and digital magazine readers in May 2017 that stated 946.3 million people read digital and print magazines. Since 3.3% of circulation is attributed to digital format, this means that 31.23 million (946.3 million * 3.3%) people globally read digital magazines. Reducing that number to just teenage girls, we have 3.14 million (31.23 million * 19% * 53%) digital magazine readers that are teenage females. Reducing that number again to remove the number of teenage girls in Australia, there are 3.1 million (3.14 million — 41,871) teenage girls who read online digital magazines in places other than Australia.

CONCLUSION

To wrap it up, out of all 3.14 million teenage girls who read online magazines, 41,871 live in Australia and 3.1 million live elsewhere. Thanks for using Wonder! Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
