Online Dating Apps Trends

Some trends in the online dating space are the use of videos, artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR). Videos are used to provide an idea of the personality of the matches of the user, while AI and VR are used to help find a better match and facilitate remote social interaction.

1. The Use of Videos

  • Videos are now being used in online dating, as they provide a more reliable way to determine the personalities of the matches identified by the app. In addition, they provide insights into the traits, mannerisms, and sense of humor of the match. Videos add value to the online dating experience and promote the showing-off one's personality in their profiles.
  • For some, videos are a big thing in the online dating space. They believe that videos will form a significant place in the future development of online dating, and many platforms are going that route.
  • One company leading that trend is Tinder. They introduced 'loops' in 2018. These are two-second videos used to replace profile pictures. Similarly, Badoo has added video chats to give users the ability to talk to a match. MeetMe has implemented a video chat feature to allow for confident connections and the safety of users before they meet their dates or match.

2. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Artificial intelligence (AI), as well as machine learning, helps with online matching as it uses the user's actions to choose a match and to introduce fresh approaches to what is called "smart matchmaking". AI will use the response time, the way a user swipes, chat content, time spent on each profile, the profiles they have viewed, and time spent on the app to help identify a match.
  • AI provides an advanced experience for users.
  • It also helps with the verification of the user's identity, thus ensuring that the profiles are authentic. AI helps to resolve security risk concerns associated with each profile.
  • AI can also help to plan the first date for users.
  • One major player leading this trend is Match.com. They use "Lara", their dating chatbot, to assist users to find love using 50 factors, including imperfections, astrological signs, hobbies, and others. Other players leading the charge in the use of AI is Hilly and BetterHalf.

3. Virtual Reality (VR)

  • One of the ways that virtual reality (VR) is being used in online dating is in the provision of dating lessons that assists users in learning how to approach their date. It is already being used by Oculus in that way.
  • VR also facilitates remote social interaction. It is considered more intense and immersive than video or text, as it creates the feeling of presence, that is, the person being in the same space with the user. Some believe that these experiences can feel just as real as meeting in person, as it allows users to communicate from a safe place, engages multiple senses, and users will see, hear and even feel their match virtually.
  • Other players in the industry believe that VR could be one of the safest ways to enjoy interaction with a stranger rather than over the telephone. Even though the technology is still evolving, not far from now, singles may have the ability to meet their date or match without having physical contact.
  • Bumble is one company that has already started using VR in dating. Another is Tinder, with its free dating application called VTime.

In this research, we utilized several sources from leaders in the dating and technology industries. We also ensured that each trend was supported by multiple sources and mentions the leaders of the trend as some major players in the online dating space.
