How has the Online Career Guidance Systems industry changed in the last 20 years and what companies are leading the charge for disruption currently?
Hello! Thanks for your question about how the Online Career Guidance Systems industry has changed in the last 20 years and which companies are leading the charge for disruption currently. The short version is that Internet-based Career Guidance Systems began to emerge in the early 2000's and are now focussing on mobile and global usage. Kuder and WOWI (World of Work Inventory) are among the companies leading the charge for disruption in the Online Career Guidance Systems industry. Below you will find a deep dive of my methodology and findings.
METHODOLOGY
I began by researching the history of Career Guidance Systems from their very beginning. Next, I looked at the development of digital and online Career Guidance Systems and examined a few examples. Then I studied how these systems are adapting to the world today and determined which Online Systems were leaders in the charge for disruption today.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND EVOLUTION
The Career Guidance Systems was developed in the late 19th century as a response to job loss due to technological advancements. Many of the systems use psychology and tests developed from psychological research to find a matching career for a prospective employee. One such system is Kuder, which was founded by psychologist Dr Frederic Kuder, who has done extensive research and development in the area of career services.
Development on the IBM Education & Career Exploration System (ECES), a computerised program, began in the 1960's, and a PC version was launched in 1990. Also in the 1990s, Career Guidance Systems like Kuder and WOWI (World of Work Inventory) first became digitised with computer programs and software for career testing and advising. Actual online systems did not emerge until the early 2000's, with ECES and WOWI being two of the first systems in 2000. Kuder did not join Internet-based services until 2010. Online Career Guidance Systems provide online tests for career assessment and career resources. For example, Kuder provides a digital career planner, the Careers Interest Assessment, the Skills Confidence Assessment, the Work Values Assessment, and Career Advisor Training online.
MARKET DISRUPTORS
WOEI and Kuder are among the companies leading the charge for disruption. In 2017 WOWI launched an application for smart phone use, making their services more mobile friendly. Kuder also created the Kuder Atlas in 2017, which allows their services to be provided on a global level and reach people around the world. Online Career Guidance Systems are apparently adapting to an increasingly digital and global market.
Both Kuder and WOWI are the first systems to move beyond Internet development and are focussing more on advancing the resources and assessments offered. WOWI is concentrating on technological advancements and incorporating changes in how people access the Internet into its service offering strategies with its new application for smartphones. Kuder is moving beyond its home country and striving for global outreach with its new online Atlas.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, Online Career Guidance Systems are developing alongside technological advancements, and leaders in the charge for disruption, such as Kuder and WOWI, are adapting to an increasingly more digital and global world.
