For the olympic sports: alpine skiing -How many athletes are there? How many people watch it during the Olympics and after the Olympics? How many events are there per year?

Hello! Thanks for your question about alpine skiing. The short version is that Alpine Skiing has an Olympic level, World Cup, and Continental Cup with athlete quotas. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.

METHODOLOGY
The FIS website has most of the information needed in regards to quotas per competition. In addition, I searched for past Olympic coverage and how many viewers the event gained during events. Last, I searched for alpine skiing events on the FIS calendar for 2017 .

NUMBER OF ATHLETES

For the 2018 Olympics the quota for alpine skiing is 320 athletes. There are 14 men and 14 women per NOC (National Olympic Committee). For the Alpine Skiiing World Cup 110 women competed and 136 men.

The quota for FIS (Federation of International Skiing) is 235 women athletes and 235 men athletes.

For the FIS World Cup, there is a quota of 55-60 athletes for women and men.

For the Continental Cup, there is a quota of 66 women athletes and 79 male athletes.

VIEWERSHIP

Based on the 2010 Winter Olympics, Freestyle Skiing had 26,928,346 viewers and Downhill Skiing had 26,689,344 viewers over the first weekend of the Olympics.

It is estimated, based on the 2014 Winter Olympics, that 63-68 million viewers watch skiing events. '

During the World Cup event in 2005, only 3,500 spectators came to watch

EVENTS

Based on the FIS calendar, there are almost 600 Alpine Skiing events for 2017.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, there are many competitions (almost 600!) featuring alpine skiing that aren't the Olympics; however, they do not attract much viewership. Additionally, the quotas per competition are clearly defined on FIS's website. Thanks for using Wonder! Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
