For the Olympic sport: freestyle skiing -How many athletes are there? How many people watch it during the Olympics and after the Olympics? How many events are there per year?
Hello, thank you for your question about international freestyle skiing events. I found that about 276 athletes participated in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic freestyle skiing events, and about 240 in the 2015 FIS World Cup. The Winter Olympics had viewership of at least 2.1 billion people with freestyle skiing being approximated as the 5th most popular sport, while the FIS World Cup freestyle skiing competition was viewed by less than 457 million people. There are significant international skiing events for about 1-7 months in 3 out of every 4 years. Here’s my detailed analysis.
METHODOLOGY
To answer your questions I made use of quite a bit of information from the FIS database. This is a great resource for more information about international winter sports. Various sports news articles also helped to fill in my research, along with marketing information from the events described.
PARTICIPANTS
WINTER OLYMPICS 2014 (SOCHI, RUSSIA)
According to the FIS, there were 5 events for men and 5 for women with about 28 participants per event, totaling about 280 athletes.
FIS WORLD CUP 2015
According to FIS, there were 6 events for men and 6 for women in the freestyle skiing category, with about 20 participants per event, totaling about 240 athletes at this level of play.
FIS JUNIOR WORLD CUP 2015
According to FIS, the up and coming junior world cup competitors were at the same level with about 240 participating athletes.
These events include all of the major freestyle skiing events currently held on an international level by FIS standards.
VIEWERSHIP
WINTER OLYMPICS 2014
According to the marketing data for the 2014 Winter Olympics, there were about 2.1 billion actual viewers and FIS anticipated up to 4.1 billion viewers from all forms of media. According to a graphical interpretation of online news article titles provided by exelate on topendsports, freestyle skiing was the 5th most popular sport at the 2014 Winter Olympics. More detailed market data about viewership is available through data collection companies like Nielsen.
2015 FIS World Cup
According to FIS, during the 2013/2014, freestyle skiing, nordic combined, and snowboarding made up only 17% of viewership combined at about 457 million viewers. The exact percentage of freestyle skiing viewership was not indicated, but it can be implied that it was less than 457 million people during that season.
RECURSION OF INTERNATIONAL FREESTYLE SKIING EVENTS
The Winter Olympics happens every 4 years (next is 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea). The FIS world cup is held every 2 years (on odd years) (the next is Hinzenbach, Austria and Oberstdorf, German). There were events planned from July 2016, up to the world cup in February 2017 and a couple more events in early March 2017, with a total of 117 events over the course of those months. The largest number of events (26) are planned for January 2017 with the majority of those events being held in northern European countries over the course of the season.
To wrap it up, every four years, about 750 athletes compete in international freestyle skiing events. Over 2 billion people watched the 2014 Winter Olympics, with freestyle skiing as approximately the 5th most popular event. Less than 457 million people watched freestyle skiing during the 2013/2014 season of the FIS world cup.
