How many news organizations are there in the US that publish more than 50 articles per week?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the number of news organizations in the US that publish more than 50 articles per week. The short version is that there are over 120 organizations that fit this criteria. While printed media sources continue to be read by US audiences, following recent trends, online sources are increasingly popular, with over 92 000 articles posted online every day. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings, including a methodology and list of all organizations.
METHODOLOGY
The organizations that have been included in this list are here because they are US publishers (including online and print journalism, blogs and newspapers) producing more than 50 articles per week. To find these organizations, I used a combination of official reports and sources that track media statistics. I also focused on finding the organizations with the largest audience, and the most frequent distribution, as research shows that audience size and frequent distribution can be associated with a large amount of content production by news organizations.
Where possible, I included the numbers of articles per week; however, in most cases this information was difficult to find. In these cases, I tracked down the website of each news organization, and estimated the amount of output per week.
Finally, a note about measuring the quantity of published content by media organizations: a lot of research has focused on the quantity of published content by number of words,
rather than by number of articles. This may be because article length has been shown to partially determine reader interest.
A full report on media in 2016 (focusing more specifically on audiences, media economics, etc.) has been recently completed by the Pew Research Centre; this report contains helpful information on media outlets that is outside the scope of this response.
