  • Twitter enabled two-factor security for advertising purposes by using their users' contact information.
  • Advertisers got the list of potential customers based on the Tailored Audiences system of Twitter which provided the list of its users' information.
  • Twitter doesn't know how many of its users were affected by this issue.
  • Twitter promised that no data was shared externally.

3. Instagram is Rolling Out New Ad Units in its Explore Tab
  • For upcoming months, the Explore Tab on Instagram will be adding ads as a part of browsing.
  • This experience will be the same as the main feed of the app.
  • Instagram said this will be a help for advertisers "be part of what’s culturally relevant and trending, while reaching new audiences who are looking to discover something new."

Four news articles related to neuromarketing and the neuro market research industry within the United States have been isolated and covered below. No trending social media posts could be found during the same period.

Left-Brain vs. Right-Brain Fallacy

  • October 14, 2019
  • Matt Johnson, a Ph.D. professor of neuroscience and founder of the neuromarketing blog PopNeuro, examines the current viral shoe color perception. He simply states that the idea of left-brain vs. right-brain telling us something about our personality is fantasy.
  • Johnson reveals that the differences in visual perception come down to individual differences in visual processing, not the usage of a portion of the brain.

IKEA's Success Lays in Neuromarketing

  • October 5, 2019
  • IKEA knows there are areas where they can improve their "neuro design." The company recognizes that they are lacking in stimulating audio sensations within their stores.
  • The company uses the smells of their food to enhance the customer's perception of their in-store experience. The article discusses this topic, as well as several others in relation to what Ikea is doing to continue to draw customers in and encourage them to make purchases.

Market Report — Neuromarketing Technology Cost Revenue 2019

  • October 10, 2019
  • This market report provides an update on the trends of neuromarketing and a forecast through 2025. The report includes comprehensive market research data as well as a SWOT Analysis, investment return analysis, and investment feasibility analysis in the field of neuromarketing. The report includes segments such as "Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Eye Tracking, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Magnetoencephalography (MEG)."
  • This market report is significant because it reveals analysis that was previously unreleased or researched and holds significance for neuromarketers looking to gauge their competition both in the United States and globally.

Deeper Rigor Required in Neuromarketing

  • October 11, 2019
  • Fragmentation and sub-par publication in academic research has been adversely effecting neuro marketing. Neuroscience itself has suffered from over-promising and hype.
  • The article states that "organizational leverage" is needed by industrial bodies to drive progress and improve standards for creating valid neuromarketing.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Surprisingly few news articles related to neuromarketing and the neuro market research industry were found published within the past two weeks with a focus on the United States. We utilized general news aggregators, specific news websites such as Forbes, CNN, and NBC, and specialized websites for neuroscience to find the above four news articles. In order to ensure that only credible sources were utilized, we avoided using blog articles such as this one comparing campaign fundraising and neuromarketing debate scores. There were other reports available outside of the United States, such as this one from Australia discussing the inability to trust what a consumer says they want.

As for social media posts and updates, there is nothing of note occurring from the past two weeks. We have carefully examined Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube for trending topics on the industry. The following are a few items we found along with an explanation of why they were not included with the main body of research.

Rebel and Soul, who claim to be the world’s first neuroexperience agency, have been tweeting about the importance of sonic branding. Unfortunately, this brand is based in Shanghai, Singapore, and London and therefore, we did not include their posts above.

George Campbell actively tweets about neuromarketing, but only has one or two responses on his tweets, which can hardly be considered trending. Even though his tweets are recent and on-topic these did not meet the criteria for inclusion.

We were also able to locate the Neuromarketing World Forum which posts on Instagram. However, with only 243 followers and a maximum of 25 likes on their posts, they do not meet the criteria of trending on social media.

Twitch, Anheuser-Busch & Boehringer Ingelheim; News and Social Media Updates

Twitch recently struck a partnership with Endel while Anheuser-Busch acquired Markstein Beverage. Boehringer Ingelheim, on the other hand, completed its expansion in Georgia.

TWITCH: NEWS UPDATES

"Trump Gets on Twitch"

  • The most discussed news about Twitch is the fact that Donald Trump joined the platform. On October 11, 2019, Tech Crunch announced that Donald Trump joined Twitch, an Amazon-owned "live-streaming platform." Although Twitch is mainly known for its game-related content, other genres of videos can be live streamed on it.
  • So far, the verified Donald Trump Twitch account only has one video, a "live stream of a Trump rally that took place in Minneapolis" on October 9th.
  • Ahead of the presidential election in 2020, Trump is not the only US politician on the platform, others include Bernie Sanders, who has over 80,000 followers compared to Donald Trump's under 40,000 followers.

"Twitch And Music Startup Endel Partner On ‘Insomnia’ — A Channel That Uses AI To Put Viewers To Sleep "

  • On October 3, 2019, Tube Filter announced a partnership between Twitch and Endel, a music startup. The main reason this deal was done is to appeal to more people, other than gamers.
  • The 24/7 channel launched through this partnership is powered by "Endel’s generative engine, an artificial intelligence program that endlessly creates new music." This music, paired with relaxing visuals, is soothing, thus sending the listeners to sleep.
  • An executive at Twitch stated that the company is actively seeking out unique ways to add content to the community. More importantly, the relaxing sounds and visuals from this channel also appeal to the ASMR community, a growing community on social media.
  • In addition, studies have revealed that "listening to relaxing sounds can reduce anxiety and help people spend more time in deep stages of sleep."

"Why Ninja Really Left Twitch For Mixer"

  • In August, Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, one of the most followed and popular gaming influencers on Twitch, announced that he was leaving Twitch for Mixer.
  • Until October, there was no exact reason provided for why he left Twitch. On October 3rd, Screen Rant published an article stating that Ninja asked for certain things in his contract that Twitch did not grant.
  • Ninja was supposedly interested in expanding his brand outside of gaming but Twitch was not allowing him to grow.
  • As described by his manager, "we were like, we've worked so, so hard to grow the Ninja brand to license things and get his name out there. We can't go backwards with it. So that's where that deal just really started not making sense."

  • According to EcoWatch, Anheuser-Busch announced on October 1, 2019, that it was launching the "largest fleet of Class 8 electric trucks in North America."
  • In the October 3rd article by EcoWatch, it was mentioned that Anheuser-Busch will purchase over 20 truck from BYD, an electric vehicle company.
  • This purchase is an initiative by the company, to increase the sustainability in its warehouse and distribution centers.   • According to an article by Brewbound published on September 30, 2019, Anheuser-Busch will be acquiring key assets from Markstein Beverage, a beer company in California.
  • Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, however, the deal is expected to be a seamless and easy transition for Markstein Beverage.
  • According to the chief sales officer of Anheuser-Busch, "Markstein Beverage Co. has been a long-time partner." He later stated that Anheuser-Busch believes the deal will help the company expand its California operations.

National Forest Foundation Partnership

  • Anheuser-Busch announced on October 8 that it partnered with the National Forest Foundation to help "protect the national forests that restore all of us."

  • The National Forest Foundation, a non-profit organization, pledged to plant 50 million trees in national forests in the US by 2024. To support this pledge, Anheuser-Busch promised to donate "$200,000 toward the effort, which should cover the cost of at least 200,000 trees by 2020."

"Boehringer Ingelheim's Ofev cuts rate of decline by 57% in range of rare lung diseases"

  • An article published by FiercePharma on October 1 revealed that Ofev by Boehringer Ingelheim is finally surpassing its expected sales after being released in 2018.
  • In a phase 3 study by Boehringer Ingelheim, Ofev "significantly slowed the rate of lung function decline in patients with a range of progressive, non-IPF interstitial lung diseases (ILD) by a whopping 57% over placebo after 52 weeks."
  • Ofev's sales skyrocketed to almost $750 million dollars, a 21.8% increase from the same quarter in 2018.

"Boehringer Ingelheim Completes Plant Expansion After $76 Million Georgia Investment"

  • An October 9th article stated that Boehringer Ingelheim "marked the completion of work Wednesday after a $76 million investment in its site in Athens, Georgia."

Over the past two weeks, Gap Inc has mentioned that it will hire 30,000 seasonal employees by the end of 2019. It has also highlighted its initiatives for World Water Week. MasterCard, on the other hand, has announced its partnership with Samsung for Samsung Pay Cash and has introduced a new product for cyber attacks.

Gap's Hill City:

  • An article published by Fortune on October 1st mentioned that Hill City, Gap's active wear brand for men will be moving into a temporary physical location.
  • Titled "Gap Inc.’s Hill City Set to Pop Up Offline into Physical Retail," the article stated that although Hill City began as an online-only brand, Gap believes the brand is fully ready to embrace the retail realm.
  • It is also mentioned that for growth, Hill City will wholesale some of its clothing to retailers.

GAP hiring 30,000 new seasonal associates

  • On October 2nd 2019, Market Watch published an article titled "Gap to hire 30,000 seasonal associates this year, fewer than half the number in 2018."
  • The article stated that by the end of 2019, Gap will hire up to 30,000 seasonal associates.
  • As to why this is down from the 65,000 seasonal associates it hired in 2018, Gap stated that it is currently investing in its full time employee base and "offering them the opportunity to pick up more hours during the holiday season."

  • On October 9th, Gap tweeted that one of its arms, Banana Republic, was ranked by Newsweek as one of the top customer-service companies in the US.
  • Newsweek worked with Statista to analyze several retail categories.
  • They found that Banana Republic had a customer service score of 8.78 out of 10.

WW Week:

  • For World Water Week, Gap tweeted on October 4th that its "sustainability team was front and center discussing [its] commitment to reduce overall water usage."
  • The brand mentioned that by "building the capacity of women’s skills through Gap Inc.'s P.A.C.E. program, women will be better equipped to voice their water, sanitation and hygiene needs."
