NSO New Technologies
After conducting an in-depth search, we established that the new technologies used by National Statistics Organizations to gather and deploy data include the GIS technology that was used by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to conduct a pilot census in August 2018. The ArcGIS technology is being used in Afghanistan and Angola to aid in the collection of accurate and timely data.
How technology Is Used
ArcGIS technology was developed to aid the collection of data including census data. The technology avails tools that create accurate and timely data required to make informed policies and decisions. ArcGIS is used in the enumeration, planning, and dissemination. This allows an entity to employ new ways that are cost-effective and time conscience. The technology has been used in the data collection of Population and Housing Census. Data from the census is used in the formulation and implementation of policies aimed at improving socioeconomic development and sustainability. The technology provides formal and official data. ArcGIS provides tools to help in the planning of work, monitor operations, and disseminate authoritative data. The technology is applied in Angola, Afghanistan, Antigua, and the Philippines.
The GIS (GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM AND GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY)
How technology is used
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is the body responsible for all official statistics in Kenya. The KNBS is also in charge of conducting census and sample surveys in the country. KNBS used GIS technology to collect data in a pilot census that was held in August 2018. Efficient data collection is ensured by the use of mobile phones, satellites with remote sensing capabilities, and the use of GIS systems. Reliable mapping can also be done using this technology. The technology enables the organization to prepare the census map for the sub-locations in Kenya and capture all enumeration areas. The technology was used for conducting a pilot census in 12 counties including Kwale, Nairobi, Kilifi, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri, Kericho, Mandera, Kisumu, Busia, West Pokot, and Kisii.
GIS AND GPS TECHNOLOGIES
How technology is Used
GPS and GIS technologies are used for acquiring sample household coordinates for sample surveys. The data is then sent to the CO server. The households whose coordinates were captured can be seen on the map together with their corresponding interview status. The validation of Master Sample Frame (MSF) for houses captured on surveys is done via the selected primary sampling units (PSU) area boundaries. Then, the actual location was determined through secondary sampling units (SSU) for the households in 2016. From the year 2017 to 2019, tablet-aided geo-tagging technology was used to develop digital footprints. In 2019, technology-aided EA delineation is being employed. The technology is being used in the Philippines to carry out Global Adult Tobacco Surveys (GATS).
