I need an org chart of Tesla's SuperCharger deployment team
Hello! Thanks for your question about building an org chart for Tesla's Supercharger deployment team. The short version is that like most companies, Tesla does not publicize its org charts, but due to their current recruitment needs, we have been able to construct at least a partial org chart from the job descriptions, which we have created as a linked Google drawing. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
We followed your advice and started with Tesla's careers page (narrowing the field to careers in Supercharger deployment) and then searching on LinkedIn. LinkedIn showed a total of 5,763 results for Tesla employees, which rose to 17,567 employees when we located the company page, but displayed only 41 employees when we narrowed the search to those with the keyword "Supercharger." This was at odds with the 52 open positions being advertised on LinkedIn, many of them quite recent. Obviously, this means that not everyone working in Supercharger deployment puts that into their job title. Unfortunately, it also means that there are a prohibitively large number of employees whose profiles we would have to search individually in order to connect them to the Supercharger deployment team.
We backed up and attempted to use Google to search LinkedIn for existing employees, and further narrowed down the field by adding "construction manager" (one of the open positions on Tesla's page) as a search term. This still provided far more hits for job openings than current employees.
There was obviously something that we were missing here; either not many of Tesla's Supercharger deployment team used LinkedIn--a distinct possibility, since LinkedIn attracts a disproportionate number of decision-makers (48%) over other roles (e.g., technicians) most often from job functions such as operations, entrepreneurship, sales, education, and healthcare (42%). This means that any attempt to build an org chart from LinkedIn would be top-heavy and misleading.
A return to Tesla's website revealed that there were as many or more proposed Supercharger stations as those already in place, indicating an enormous upcoming expansion. Since this indicated that Tesla needed to build up its deployment teams, we conducted a general search for news about Tesla's recruitment drives and revisited the job descriptions on their career page.
RESULTS
From the descriptions of the available careers, we have been able to verify the following positions. Where the job description gives information about direct reporting, or we have inferred the existence of a position that does not currently have an opening, we have included that in the notes below.
- The North America Director of Charging Infrastructure is mentioned as the Regional Manager's direct report. We have listed it as the "World Regional" Director, though we do not know if this is the official title.
- Construction Managers appear to operate regionally (e.g., "California and the western United States"), coordinate with Project Managers, and distribute drawing and design revisions to Project Managers, Supervisors, and trade workers. We infer from this that the Construction Manager most likely reports directly to the Regional Manager.
- Supervisors - There were no listings for this position, but they are mentioned under the Construction Manager.
- Field Service Technician - This is a maintenance role, and so possibly outside of the scope of your question, but since they could conceivably take on a role in deployment, we have included them in this list.
For the most part, LinkedIn provided the same open positions. The additional roles being sought, like the Mechanical Engineer and the "Energy Advisor," are not deployment roles based on the descriptions, and so are not included here.
There are only a few instances in which direct reports are explicitly given in the job description, so we can at best infer an org chart based on the relationships that most make sense. We have done our best to do so, but we must emphasize again that neither Tesla nor any other company in our experience publicly publishes its org chart lest it give away a competitive advantage. Therefore, this org chart should be regarded as tentative and possibly incomplete.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, while Tesla does not publicize its org charts, we have been able to construct at least a partial org chart from the job descriptions thanks to their current recruitment drive, which we have created as a linked Google drawing.
