I need a list of salaries for Deans, Associate Deans, and Assistant Deans of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, both private and public. I have been offered a position as Associate Dean for one of the private schools and was asked to formally request a salary. Here is a list of optometry schools for you to investigate: rows 2-8 on the attached spreadsheet
Hi! Thanks for asking Wonder to have another go at researching the salaries for Deans, Associate Deans and Assistant Deans at certain Schools/Colleges of Optometry.
I first started by verifying the information found in the previous response. The information on benefits was sourced directly from university websites and therefore is reliable. Additionally, salary information for public schools is often published.
However, I ran into some difficulty when trying to source salaries for the private institutions on your list. As non-public entities, they are under no obligation to publish salary data. Additionally, due to privacy laws, there is no pre-compiled sources for confirmed data for these entities. Instead, I used similar data from other healthcare/health sciences positions and triangulated approximate salaries based on position and geographic location. For all private institutions, I did look at similar (private) universities/colleges around the state to see if any other dean/associate dean/assistant dean salaries had been published, but this was unavailable.
Here is the methodology behind the salaries for each university:
UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA - SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY
Using UAB's salary book, I checked the published salary of a dean, associate dean and assistant dean from the faculty list. These wages were listed monthly, so annual figures on the spreadsheet represent a multiple of 12. Where there were multiple members of staff with the same title, the salary on the spreadsheet represents an average of all entities.
MIDWESTERN UNIVERSITY ARIZONA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY
Midwestern University does not publish its staff salaries online, so other means of obtaining this data was necessary. Midwestern run both the Arizona and Chicago College of Optometry, and there was data available for related roles for this university. The Dean of Dental Medicine receives a salary of $325,000. An Associate Dean of Medicine receives on average $203,366. The average base salary for an Assistant Dean is $139,918, but this across all college types is likely higher for medical fields.
UC BERKELEY SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY
Using UC Berkeley's salary book, I checked the published salary of a dean, associate dean and assistant dean from the faculty list. These wages were listed monthly, so annual figures on the spreadsheet represent a multiple of 12. Where there were multiple members of staff with the same title, the salary on the spreadsheet represents an average of all entities.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY
Again, as a private entity, this college does not publish its staff salaries. However, a private school dean for dentistry will earn on average $282,781. An associate dean of medicine will earn $227,622. An assistant dean in the area earns around $93,954.
WESTERN UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Western University of Health Sciences also do not publish their faculty salaries. However, they did participate in study by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which gathered data about dean salaries in the USA. While not the school of optometry, the Dean of Nursing for a private institution could earn up to $400,000. The max for all institutions in the "west" region was $380,000. An associate dean of medicine will earn $224,160.An assistant dean in the area earns around $93,954.
NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
Nova Southeastern University is also among those who do not publish faculty salary data. However, in a similar fashion, I found that a Dean of Dentistry in Florida earns around $282,781, and an Associate Dean of Medicine $204,880. The average assistant dean in Florida earns $138,216.
As a side note, Nova Southeastern is among the only higher education institutions in the country paying its president a seven-figure salary.
ILLINOIS COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY
Again, triangulation of salary data was necessary for the Illinois College of Optometry. Chicago-area Deans of Pharmacy earn $248,910. Associate Deans of Medicine earn $215,096. An assistant dean in the Chicago metro area earns a healthy $153,969.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, salaries for some positions were readily available, whereas others needed estimation and triangulation using educated hypotheses. It was interesting to note that public and private institution salaries did not appear to be all that different. All information has been entered on the attached spreadsheet.
I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to ask Wonder if you have any more questions!
