Need a list of companies that use Linkedin or Crunchbase API
Hi! Thank you for your question requesting a list of companies that use Linkedin API or Crunchbase API. There are, according to builtwith.com, 406,079 'active sites' that use the Linkedin API. Data was less coherent for Crunchbase, which, on builtwith.com's official site, only lists two active sites using the service. Additional sources suggest other websites that may be using the Crunchbase API, including AOL, which bought TechCrunch and Crunchbase in 2013. Please read on for a deep dive of my methodology, research, and findings.
METHODOLOGY
I began by looking for reputable pre-compiled lists from third party review and analysis sites. I was able to find builtwith.com, a company and website that specializes in technology trends and use lookups. For Linkedin, there was quite a lot of data available, which I have put into an attached Google spreadsheets. Unfortunately, there is a steep paywall beyond the first 50 companies/sites utilizing the Linkedin API. Crunchbase seems to be rarely used-- as mentioned above, there were only two companies reported to be using Crunchbase, whose data I have attached in this separate Google spreadsheet. Builtwith.com's website purports to update their data set weekly, based on available information. I then began searching through industry articles and reports, trusted media sites, and databases to determine if there were more unlisted users of the Crunchbase API. I found several articles, but all of them were from 2013 and earlier (one of the most descriptive being all the way back to 2008). An attempt to verify the current use of Crunchbase API by the mentioned companies/sites was unsuccessful. Therefore, the information gathered from these websites is unverifiable, and some of these companies may not any longer user the Crunchbase API. I include these companies to provide supplementary information.
LINKEDIN API
Approximately 406,079 active sites use the LinkedIn API. These companies/sites include NPR, the DMV website, Hulu, and Zulily. I have compiled the complete list of 50 sites (available without a paywall) in the attached Google spreadsheet.
CRUNCHBASE API
As mentioned above, information on who uses Crunchbase API is either less available, or if taken at face value, there are simply only a limited number of companies who use the service. I have attached the information found in the Builtwith.com's database in this Google spreadshee t.
There are, as previously mentioned, several older articles that mention the use of Crunchbase API by some companies. AOL seems to have acquired TechCrunch, Crunchbases's creator, in 2013. It seems, based on the article, that AOL uses Crunchbase, which is under a creative commons license. The article details a controversy between AOL and the tech startup Pro Populi's People + app, which utilized AOL's information available on and through Crunchbase. The conclusion of this controversy is not detailed in any article available online, so it is hard to know if the startup Pro Populi still utilizes Crunchbase or not.
Another article from 2012 details SeedTable's use of the Crunchbase API. (Seedtable's linked-to website is in Russian, which seems to contradict the information that SeedTable was founded by "Imran Ghory, the London-based founder of CoderStack"). The platform "sorts data by sector, most active cities in the last 12 months, or historical activity, which shows the number of companies founded versus the number of exits."
The last article, from 2008, mentioned individual app developers who made use of the Crunchbase API in different ways. Listed were
CONCLUSION
There are approximately 406,079 active sites that use the LinkedIn API. There appear to be not nearly as many companies that use Crunchbase API, and based on very limited or old data, there are approximately 10 that I was able to locate. I have detailed information from both in the LinkedIn spreadsheet and the Crunchbase spreadsheet.
