I would need a list of Angels, investors or entrepreneurs that have founded or started businesses in the same field as 1Drop Diagnostics (Swiss Startup involved in medical diagnostics) in the Bay Area.
Hello! Thanks for your question about the entrepreneurs and investors who have founded businesses in the same field as 1Drop Diagnostics in the San Francisco Bay Area. The short version is that we found six competitors for 1Drop in the Bay Area: Orphidia, Prime Genomics, Demonpore, Sensory Health Systems, Karius, and mFluidDx. The available information about their founders and investors has been provided in our deep dive below.
We sought companies in the same field as 1Drop Diagnostics in order to find out who their investors and founders might be. Our first step was to investigate 1Drop Diagnostics to better understand their particular sector. Next, we sought competitors in the same sector (diagnostics and biotechnology) to identify a list of those in the same field and in the Bay Area which best seem set to compete with 1Drop.
We next conducted a general Google search for biotech companies specializing in diagnostics in the Bay Area. Finally, we searched for diagnostic startups in that area to make sure that no new companies had slipped through the cracks. We discounted those which did not have an active website, or in which their website seemed to just be a placeholder, deeming these to be failed startups. Finally, we investigated each in our list to find out who their founders and investors might be, insofar as that information is available to the public.
1DROP DIAGNOSTICS OVERVIEW
1Drop Diagnostics develops non-invasive diagnostic tools, specifically, microfluidic chips which "automatically detect multiple biomarkers after the addition of one drop of sample." Our usual business profile sources did not list their direct competitors, so we compiled our own list below.
Orphidia is another San Francisco-based startup which specializes in developing "pioneering technology for low-cost, minimally-invasive blood tests that can be performed anywhere and anytime." Orphidia was founded by Dr. Aron Rachamim. We could not find a list of investors.
Prime Genomics specializes in scanning for breast cancer via salivary samples. We were able to find an address and phone number, but their homepage seems to have been compromised. (We do not recommend downloading anything from it.) Its founder is Sandy Shaw and it received an undisclosed investment from The Iron Yard in 2013. We were unable to otherwise uncover a list of its investors.
Demonpore, another San Francisco-based company, claims to have developed "a novel molecular sensing platform that will scale cheaply" which will "disrupt the $55B/year clinical lab testing and diagnostics segment of that market." Its site lists its founders as Kent Kemmish and Michael Frechen. We could find no other list of investors.
Sensory Health Systems, based out of Santa Clara, produces "smart and connected healthcare solutions to manage health of children and chronic patients." We were unable to find the founders or a list of investors, and despite their web presence we believe that this startup may have already failed. However, we could not confirm this and so have included the company in this list.
Karius is based out of Redwood City, CA, and provides "a validated test that can detect more than 1,250 bacteria, DNA viruses, and eukaryotic pathogens, including yeasts, molds, and protozoa." We could not discover the name of a founder or a list of investors, but we did find that Mickey Kertesz became the company's CEO in October 2014.
mFluidDx produces the FAST Chip (Field-ready, Affordable, Sensitive, Trackable), a portable molecular detection chip which has drawn the attention of a number of institutional supporters, including UC Berkeley, UCSF, NSF Renovation Corps, SOSV, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Citris Foundry, QB3, and Indie Bio. We could not find the name of a founder.
To wrap it up, we found six competitors for 1Drop in the Bay Area: Orphidia, Prime Genomics, Demonpore, Sensory Health Systems, Karius, and mFluidDx. The available information about their founders and investors has been provided in our deep dive above.
