I need information on the number of athletes playing football, ice hockey and lacrosse in the U.S.. Need the numbers by sport, by gender and by level (youth, high school, college, professional).
Hello! Thank you for your question about the number of athletes playing football, ice hockey and lacrosse separated by age group and gender. I was able to find all of the numbers you requested. I created a spreadsheet to break down each sport by age bracket and gender. The spreadsheet can be found here. Please read below for more information on my findings.
SUMMARY
I first searched for each sport individually by age bracket and looked for reports for the number of players in each sport. I used news articles for the total youth football players. I also found an excellent source from the NCAA documenting college sports participation from 1981 to 2016. This source contains detailed information of college sports by gender, year and sport. For the youth ice hockey totals, I used the numbers from USA Hockey and added the age ranges for each gender for the age ranges of 13-14 to under 6 to get the total of youth ice hockey players. I found college and high school hockey player breakdowns from Scholarship Stats. For professional sports, I had to estimate teams and number of players, a break down is found here for the totals for football and hockey. I used the National Women's Hockey League player list to estimate the number of professional female ice hockey players. Lastly, I found a report from US Lacrosse breaking down the players by age and gender. All of the information I found is from 2015-2016 and focuses on the United States. The full breakdown can be viewed on this spreadsheet.
CONCLUSION
A full summary of my findings including a breakdown for football, ice hockey and lacrosse by age range and gender can be viewed on the spreadsheet here.
