How many mobile apps are made a year in the United States, in the United Kingdom, in Europe and in Asia?
Hello! Thanks for asking Wonder how many mobile apps are made each year in United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. The most useful sources I found to respond to your query were Business of Apps, the App Figures blog, and Progressive Policy.
In short, the number of apps published each year has grown substantially over the last several years with with about 2,300 apps being released each day. In 2016, 2.4 million mobile apps were published. Of those, approximately
• 789,600 apps were developed in Asia.
• 705,600 apps were developed in North America.
• 549,600 apps were developed in Europe (minus the UK).
• 163,200 apps were developed in the UK.
Below, please find the results of my research, along with my methodology.
METHODOLOGY
I began my research by looking for precompiled data at a variety of industry sources, but I found no such data. So, then I searched for the total number of apps published annually, looking for country-specific data where possible. Finding limited data, I also searched for statistics on the number of app developers in the regions you specify. I have used these pieces of data to triangulate the figures you requested.
APPS PUBLISHED ANNUALLY
According to data compiled by the App Figures blog, the number of new apps released each year has grown substantially over the years. In 2016, 2.4 million apps were published, 1.1 million for iOS and 1.3 million for Android. There was a rather large jump in the number of new apps released from 2013 to 2014, but in 2015 and 2016, the number of new apps has been steadier.
A 2016 article at Business of Apps states that the App Store adds approximately 1,000 new apps per day, while Google Play adds about 1,300 new apps per day.
MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT BY REGION
Data on regional development of mobile apps was limited. However, there is some existing data on the number of app developers in various parts of the world that will give us some insight into the percentage of apps developed in those regions. The numbers vary slightly, according to the source, but they all point to similar percentages of developers in the requested regions.
According to Evans Data, there are 12 million mobile app developers in the world. The report suggests that there are 2.7 million developers in Asia Pacific (2.2 million Android and 500,000 iOS developers).
A report by Progressive Policy on the app economy in Europe offers some useful data as well. According to this report, there are approximately 1.66 million app developers in the US, compared to 1.64 million in Europe. Another article states that 380,000 app developers are located in the UK.
• 32.9% Asia
• 29.7% Europe
• 29.4% North America
• 3.5% South America
• 1.5% Oceania
Also, since there are 380,000 developers in the UK, we can calculate that they make up 23% of the European group (380,000 / 1.64 million). That would mean that the UK makes up about 6.8% of the world's developers (29.7 / .23). Subtracting 6.8 from 29.7, we get 22.9%. So, that gives us the following breakdown:
• 32.9% Asia
• 29.4% North America
• 22.9% Europe
• 6.8% UK
• 3.5% South America
• 1.5% Oceania
CALCULATIONS
I was unable to find the number of developers specific to the US, so I will use the North American figure as a proxy. Using the percentages for regional app developers and the total apps published in 2016, we can roughly calculate the following:
• 789,600 apps developed in Asia (2.4 million x .329)
• 705,600 apps developed in North America (2.4 million x .294)
• 549,600 apps developed in Europe (minus the UK) (2.4 million x .229)
• 163,200 apps developed in the UK (2.4 million x .068)
• 84,000 apps developed in South America (2.4 million x .035)
• 36,000 apps developed in Oceania (2.4 million x .015)
SUMMARY
To sum up, there were 2.4 million new apps published in 2016. Fully 789,600 apps were developed in Asia, while 705,600 apps were developed in North America. Some 549,600 apps were developed in the EU, plus another 163,200 apps were developed in the UK.
