Mike Millay - Employment with Walt Disney Company and ESPN

Mike Millay joined Walt Disney Company as an executive director in 2014. He was also one of the original architects of ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex. Below is a full profile of Mike Millay's employment at Walt Disney Company and ESPN.

Walt Disney Company

ESPN

  • Mike Millay was one of the original architects of ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex.

Research Strategy

We managed to get Mike Millay's responsibilities and projects at Disney. However, apart from the position he held at ESPN, his role, responsibilities and projects he worked on are not available in the public domain.

Research began by going through all of Millay's biographies, as listed on websites of companies he has worked for. Most of these websites share the same biography. The biography details his career at Disney including his position, projects he oversaw, as well as his achievements. However, apart from the position held, the biographies are silent on his full role at ESPN, as well as the projects he ran.

We paid special attention to ESPN's website. We scanned for any profile that the company may have compiled on Mike Millay, but no profiles nor history was found. Research also looked for his employment history at the company, but it does not exist on ESPN's website. Finally, we looked for any news or press releases on the website, which Millay may have been featured. Only two news articles that mentioned him were found, but none had a mention of his career at ESPN.

Further, we looked at sports news published around the time he was at ESPN. There are several news articles, but all of them had a reference to his title at ESPN only. We also looked at Millay's personal channels, like LinkedIn, but only his biography is featured, which has no mention of his projects at ESPN. We therefore concluded this information is not available in the public domain.

Mike Millay - Personal Life

An in depth search through social media profiles, news sites, and business profiles uncovered very limited information on Michael Millay's personal life. The research did find that he has sons and is involved with several sports related non-profits. The relevant findings are provided below, as well as a summary of our research strategy to better explain why more information does not appear to be publicly available.

Personal Life

  • By making a series of connections on Facebook (see the research strategy for details) we were able to confirm that Michael Millay appears to have at least four sons, Matthew, Daniel, David, and Michael.
  • Millay is involved with several non-profit sports organizations including "the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, the DeVos Sports Business Management Program and Ohio University’s Sports Management Program." He is also involved with the National Council of Youth Sports.
  • Millay's son David is a partner with him at EngageMint.
  • It appears that at least two of Millay's sons followed him into the sports. His son Michael was a professional soccer player and is the founder of Rooted Media, which focuses on sports photography and video. His son David is not only a partner at Engagemint, he is on the board at the RIPITT Foundation, which encourages kids to acquire life skills through sports.

News Articles

  • In January 2019, the National Association of Sports Commissions, of which Millay is a founding member, announced they were holding the inaugural Sports Facilities Summit in May in Knoxville, TN. Millay was one of the announced speakers at the event.
  • In an article announcing the launch of the NextUp: The Youth Sports Industry Conference, Mike Millay and David Millay were announced as the speakers at a breakout session on hospitality.

Research Strategy

We began our search by attempting to locate social media profiles for Millay on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as we already had the LinkedIn profile from the initial hour of research. Our thought was that if we could locate his social media profiles, we may be able to see any personal information he shared, including details on his family and charitable activities. We examined all the Mike (or Michael) Millays found on Twitter and on Facebook, but none of them were the person we were looking for. We had a similar result on Instagram and were not able to find any social media profiles for Millay beyond LinkedIn.

Next we conducted a press scan to uncover any stories written about, or interviews conducted with, Millay in the past few years. This search only resulted in nine news stories, and each was examined for details on Millay's personal life. One article mentioned a session that Millay was holding at a conference that stated he was doing the session with David Millay. Because of the same last name, we searched for a Facebook profile for David Millay to see if we could confirm a familial connection between the two men. We found a profile for David Millay which had Matthew Millay listed as a brother. Matthew's profile led us to a profile for Kassell Millay, who was listed as a sister-in-law to Matthew. On Kassell's profile, there was a family picture which included Michael Millay, so we were able to confirm that David and Michael were from the same family.

The press scan resulted in two articles that mentioned Millay in the past 12 months and they have been included above. None of the other 6 stories examined added any details on Millay's personal life.

Our final strategy was to examine the bios provided by the various companies and associations that Millay has been involved with through the years. According to his LinkedIn profile, these include Clancy's Sports Properties, EngageMint, 3D Institute, National Association of Sports Commissions, ESPN Wide World of Sports, Disney, and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. Each of these was examined, both by looking at the current sites and by seeing if there were archived sites from the time Millay was involved with each organization. This allowed us to find some limited information on additional charity activities, but nothing on social causes, hobbies, or family life. It should be noted that searches for Michael Millay's charity involvement did bring up several results, but they were all about his son Michael, and were therefore not relevant to our search.
