Clients enjoy the excellent customer service and the New Mexico and military discount which makes it a bit affordable to get into the building. Others describe the place as a light show that meets a haunted house for art school kids. Many also appreciate the fact that with a ticket they get to have fun the whole day.

Methodology

We leveraged sources like Trip Advisor, Facebook, Yelp and several others that had customer reviews on Meow Willow. We focused on current customer perceptions and sentiments. After going through the reviews from different sources, we made the following summary on what their audience say about them.

Extraordinary with so much fun

Customers find Meow Wolf to be exceptional and indescribable giving one a lifetime experience. They are amazed by the highly stimulating art extravaganza. Its combination of concerts, fun house, maze, playhouse, riddle, jungle, and a museum is quite exceptional. They also find it an ideal place for one to have fun with his or her family. Many people who have been to this place also appreciate the fact that their experience at Meow Wolf superseded their expectations.

They appreciate the thrilling experience that they receive when one goes into the dryer, refrigerator and ice machine. The soul-stirring experience they get while getting into the dark corners, the secret passageways, the nooks, crannies, and the abandoned house. The customers describe the meditative experience and the room with just music and lights as enjoyable and out of this world. They enjoyed the beautiful artistic interpretation of the themes of every room that took their breath away.

The availability of food truck onsite makes it convenient for individuals and families. Also, many appreciate the designated area where those with children can sit as they wait for meals. They also relish the appropriate description given to some venues like “psychedelic,”You can’t trip as we can", and “sorry-we’re.” So much fun in the house of eternal return. Many clients are eager to go back with their children when they are on school holiday. When there was a one-hour wait, many appreciate the kind gesture they received from the workers of Meow Wolf who gave them delicious hot drinks and kept them entertained. Those that have also watched the Meow Wolf origin story described it as inspiring, innovative, pure art and passionate.

Concerns raised by most clients

Due to the massive volume of customers who troop into building especially during spring break, some customers feel they waited for quite some time to get in. Others think that it is quite expensive and some would want additional discounts to be put to make it more affordable to many customers who would want to revisit the place. They would also want the charges of 3D glasses to be included at the entry.

During the winter season, some customers say that they were disappointed with the space heater that was not working. A few customers believe that the place is more suitable for children and teenagers. Some also think that the arts are overrated while others feel that the area is too crowded.

1. ARTS AND CULTURAL TASTES IN LAS VEGAS

Fun and Fair Culture (Funfair)

Branded as ‘Sin City,’ ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’ and ‘America’s Playground,’ Las Vegas is a cultural destination valued by both internal and external tourist. The city is rich in diverse arts and culture and a lifestyle that remains attractive to various people from around the world. Las Vegas locals are culturally fun-loving and indulge in such activities all the year round. The feel in the city is eternally festival with overnight parties and poker playing as some activities that are common in the city. Taste and Sounds of Soul Food and Music Celebration is one of the funfair events celebrated periodically in the city and that attract hundreds of thousands of fans from within and without Las Vegas.

The Feel of Art in Design

As a culture, Las Vegans have made art part of their lives, from artistically designed buildings to five-star hotels that are art-inspired to neighborhoods that are entirely going arts. It points to a city whose residents are more interested in intrinsic interests that they fulfill through arts. The Las Vegas Arts District as an emerging neighborhood that has been refurbished to reflect the city’s love for arts and encourage more artists to flock the city. The Arts District is infamous for its monthly block party and art walk in which individuals enjoy food and music as artists showcase their pieces in open air galleries like the ArtSquare and the Arts Factory. Downtown Las Vegas, in every aspect, is the culmination of the ‘culture and arts feel’ in the city. From vintage hotel/casinos suggestive of a glamorous bygone era to iconic neon signs and the influence of organized crime, the place is a reflection of the city’s over-the-edge tastes and preferences in arts and culture.

Historical Inclinations

Over the years, the cultural tastes of Las Vegans have grown beyond circus arts, or Elvis impersonators to include the best art museums in Las Vegas that bring out the historical journey of the city. While tourists come to Local Las Vegas to get a feel of the ‘Sin City,’ locals are more inclined towards in pastimes that make their home feel more like a real community. Residents identify with the Las Vegas Natural History Museum for its preservation of prehistoric animals that were once found in the area and the Neon Museum for its display of vintage Vegas signs used for illumination the Strip from the1930s to date. The Mob Museum also interests locals for its historical reflections of the darker side of Sin City crime across America.

COMPARISON BETWEEN LAS VEGAS AND OVERALL US IN TERMS OF ARTS AND CULTURE TASTES

Compared to other US cities, Las Vegas is a hub of fun and enjoyment with locals used to the ‘live your life, who cares’ kind of attitude. Many tourists from all over the world choose Las Vegas over other US cities owing to its care-free culture that enables people to make the most out of their lives. Las Vegas is ranked 13th by the New York Times out of 50 world destinations to visit. While Las Vegas is characterized by debauchery kind of nightlife marked by overnight parties and staggering drinkers, the US, on the other hand, does not have a distinct way of culture and lifestyle, given the many groups that make up the population. There are other US cities like Chicago which has an almost similar approach to culture and arts but not to the level of popularity and reputation that Las Vegas has earned. Due to the uniqueness of its arts and culture, Las Vegas’ is a brand positioned higher than the rest of US cities. The American pop culture is common in the US with many individuals opting to pay attention to items like film, video games television programs and commercials, brand names and symbols, internet memes, sports, clothing fads, slang words and catchphrases, and even food.

COMPARISON BETWEEN DENVER AND OVERALL US IN TERMS OF ARTS AND CULTURE TASTES

Compared to the US, Denver is somewhat laid back in terms of arts and cultural exploration. While Las Vegans place value in simple care-free and fun-filled lifestyles, Denver locals are more interested in activities and events that are high-end experiential lifestyles which reflect the cities Western roots. On the other hand, various communities within the US such as Black Americans and Hispanics among other groups, have divergent interests depending on their states of residence and general beliefs. For instance, Black Americans in Denver have adapted to the city’s culture to the extent that they do not have the same culture as the same group of people in California. While Denver locals identify with specific cultural inclinations, the US multicultural. Denver city’s arts are often connected to the city’s Western origins while in the US, arts are a reflection of the diverse cultures that make up the country’s population. The resultant American art is an amalgamation of various artistic works from the Latin Americans, Caribbean and American artists. Even with the difference in culture between Denver and the US, the latter influences Denver’s locals on issues centered around political correctness, independence, sports, and food.

Both Austin and Dallas have vibrant art scenes that feature modern and contemporary art. Dallas is highly active and has been featured among the top ten US art cities. Austin is also a designated as a City of Media Arts by UNESCO and has various forms of art including abstract wall murals, and sophisticated sculptures.

Information for this research was obtained from credible publications, websites and news articles relating to the cultural tastes, preferences, and priorities of art in Austin and Dallas. Some of these sources include Business Wire, PR News Wire, the Dallas Art Association, Austin Visual Arts Association, Artsy, Ranker, and hashtagify. These resources contained information on the art offered in both cities, popular artists and current trends. Some of the terms that came up frequently relating to art in both cities include contemporary art, modern art, art with social relevance and indie art.

ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL TASTES, PRIORITIES AND PREFERENCES

DALLAS

Dallas has become popular in the world of art with an increase in art purchases, superb museums, and active art collectors. Most of the art collectors are focused on contemporary art. It is currently ranked fifth on the "Top 10 USA Art Cities.” Trending hashtags relating to the Dallas art scene include #DeepEllum, #modernart #contemporaryart #abstract art and #etysocial.

Currently, Dallas has one of the largest art museums in the US which features a wide range of items ranging from contemporary art to Asian art. Last fall, Dallas art museums featured haute-couture, doll houses, Dada and surrealism. The city has a large Hispanic population, and its Mexican exhibition attracted 125,984 visitors. Additionally, Dallas is home to some of the most important private art collections in the world.

Dallas as an art industry:
According to the Business Council for the Arts, North Texas has the third largest arts economy in the US. An estimated $1 billion is spent annually on the art economy. This has tripled in the last five years with a 207% increase since 2012.

AUSTIN

Austin has a very vibrant but conventional art scene that features abstract wall murals, sophisticated sculptures, and other art varieties. Some of the trending hashtags relating to art in Austin include #abstractart, #handmade, #oilpainting, and #newart.

One factor that has contributed to the growth of the art scene in Austin is the establishment of art organizations and creative hubs whereby artists can live and showcase their work to the public. According to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Austin has been designated as the City of Media Arts.

Austin is considered as the home of contemporary art at the Jones Center. Additionally, there are street fairs, festivals, the Mexic-Arte Museum, the West Austin tour, and the Big Medium East tour that are used as platforms to showcase art. Similarly, the Fusebox Festival and the Cathedral of Junk also features eccentric arts.

An interesting aspect of art in Austin is that it covers various topics, ranging from politics, identity, and race. One example is the SXSW 2019 (South by Southwest) show that features contemporary artists covering current political and social issues.

Immersive Performance Companies

In this study, we found that three examples of immersive performance companies are Cirque du Soleil, Punchdrunk, and Fulldome.pro. Below is a detailed explanation of our findings.

MAIN FINDINGS

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
Cirque du Soleil was formerly known to the public as Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (The Stiltwalkers of Baie-Saint-Paul). This company started in early 1980 in a small town on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, where its eclectic show included jugglers, dancers, fire breathers, and musicians. In 1984, it brought its road show across the province. Cirque du Soleil then toured in the U.S. for the first time in 1987. The company toured Europe in 1990. In 1993, its first show called “Mystere” started in Las Vegas, and is still being performed at present. This is currently the longest running show in Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil also expanded its mobile troupe in 1993, beginning in South America and Asia, then the rest of the world. The company distinguishesd itself by its unique take on a circus since it is animal-free, arresting, dramatic, stunning, and reflective. Its performances greatly attract its audiences with the performers’ outrageous costumes, magical lighting, and original music.
Guy Laliberté, the main motivation for the troupe’s growth, dubbed the company’s new mobile troupe in his own words, “The sun symbolizes youth, energy, and strength”. In Cirque du Soleil’s first tour, the company promoted itself with the slogan, “We Reinvent the Circus,” which made people of all ages want to see the new circus. Its detailed set design, stage with seating on all sides, and active audience participation, both physically and imaginatively, was the sample project that formed the refined template, which has been the foundation of every new Cirque du Soleil show since. An article published by The New York Times on April 12, 1991, showed how Cirque du Soleil formed its audiences. The company continued to be a performing troupe worldwide. It has currently 23 shows: 12 shows on tour, one show in Mexico, and 10 shows in permanent cities in the U.S. Overall, the company has been successful by creating a new product that incorporates “the Circus” with other forms of art.
PUNCHDRUNK GLOBAL
Punchdrunk Global LTD is a London-based firm formed in 2014 and founded in 2015. Since 2011, an interactive performance called “Time Out” has been running at the McKittrick Hotel on West 27th Street in New York City. It was recently closed, but was opened instead in Shanghai. A review of Time Out mentions that the performance’s dark, smooth, and gorgeous installation is astonishing both in size and detail. Audience members who are silent have been given scary white masks and sent off into in a six-floor warren of vignettes, while attractive actor-dancers who are roaming around act out mysterious scenes that were inspired by Macbeth and Hitchcock. “There are more than 90 different spaces to explore, ranging from a candy shop to a cemetery.”
Punchdrunk distinguished itself in immersive theater through different avenues. Successful theater performances were broadened with a book chapter on “Redefining Visceral Performance” in 2009 and a book with 130 pictures taken of one of its performances called “The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable”. It has also built a name and recently expanded into custom immersive experience for artists and corporate clients. Some of these experiences include Rihanna’s latest tour kick-off party, TBS' launch of Season Two of Search Party, and a virtual reality experience for 2016 Cannes Festival. Overall, the company has become successful in a short period through creating “theater”, and breaking down the fourth wall to enable its audience members to touch, feel, and smell its performances.
FULLDOME.PRO
Fulldome.pro is a relatively new company that utilizes virtual Reality, 360-degree projections, and dome facilities to provide immersive performances. One of the company’s signature installations is Wisdome LA (an immersive experience park in Los Angeles, with five domes, that provides virtual reality and 360-degree audio and visual performances). It has regular and special musical performances that are scheduled until the end of 2019. Fulldome.pro distinguishes itself by the dome-shaped installations it uses that get people’s attention, and is still expanding its market by: 1) going where there are large groups of influencers (installation at Coachella), and 2) involving itself into accepted art displays (middle of the art museum in Los Angeles).
The company is expanding its scope in different cities and corporate events with the help of its 14 different sized domes that can hold one person to 1,200 people from any place. It has provided domes for cocktail parties to Comic Con. Furthermore, Fulldome.pro is expanding worldwide with current events in different countries like Thailand, China, Australia, Russia, and Africa. Overall, the company has been successful by adapting to a new technology, virtual reality, and incorporating it to improve the entertainment experiences of the people.
