Men and Social Media

Male interaction with content on social media can be analyzed using official information from Facebook IQ. Each month the trending topics among men on social media are listed. The statistics cover Facebook and Instagram. Sports was the main topic of interest, but a deeper dive reveals other topics that men have interest in. I have prepared a spreadsheet to present the specific topics. My write-up describes categories of the top subjects, as well as information on some supporting topics.

The top interaction among men on social media from January 2017 to December 2017 can be described in five categories. The first is rap music. Men appear to be engaging with content related to older and modern rap music. Top searches and interactions were with Chris Brown, Snoop Dog, Young Jeezy, Boosie Badazz, Lil Uzi Vert and Eminem. There is also an interest in rock music stars like Kid Rock and AC/DC.
Fantasy movies are also popular among men. Star Wars and Darth Vader are some of the most consistent popular topics. Stephen King sparked men's interest in Lion's Gate Media with the movie IT. Among other popular television topics, men are mostly interested in the news. Over the entire year of 2017, we observed a steady interest in action-packed video games like Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider.

Food Truck Rallies, a.k.a "food truck festivals", have become popular among men on social media. Their interest was sparked as a result of the "food truck boom" that has swept over the country the past several years. The first festival of this type was the LA Food Fest in 2010. The "box pleat rebellion" of 2017 sparked an interest among men in unisex clothing. The New York Times reports that we are experiencing a breaking down of traditional dress prejudice. Gender fluid menswear is taking center stage in 2018 at Fashion Week. Since 2016, online conversation has been growing around unisex menswear. 56% of people in the United States agree that gender roles are becoming increasingly irrelevant. 46% of searches on social media for Unisex discussions were men.

Conclusion
