Medical Groups and Health Systems Not Affiliated With a Hospital

Five of the top medical groups for the given North Carolina cities are Holston Medical Group, FastMed, Randolph Health, Raleigh Medical Group, and Prana Health. Access to their websites, reasons they are key players, and proof they are not affiliated with hospitals are given below.

1. HOLSTON MEDICAL GROUP

WEBSITE
REASON(S) THEY ARE A KEY PLAYER
  • More than 40 doctors left Novant Health and went to Holston Medical Group to open 13 new offices in northern Mecklenburg and Lake Norman.

Holston Medical Group was already a key player in Tennessee and Virginia and these locations will be their first in the Carolinas.
PROOF NOT HOSPITAL AFFILIATED
  • Dr. David Cook describes Holston Medical Group as "a physician-owned and -led organization" that continues to provide the best affordable care to the communities and patients. STRATEGY

Our first strategy was to search for available information from news sources to find information regarding medical groups without hospital affiliations. We discovered that in addition to Tryon, doctors left Atrium to practice under Holston Medical Group.
We were able to identify other key players from a list of the top 30 urgent care centers and researched those to identify those that were not affiliated with a hospital.
We identified a current key player, Amity Medical Group, however we excluded them due to their very recent claims and lawsuits identifying them as a major player in Medicare fraud amongst other charges and the foreseeability of them losing their status as a key or top player in the independent market.
As a final strategy, to identify the fifth key player, we used a physician search from Coastal Physician Alliance to identify independent doctors that were working for an independent physician group, not with a hospital. From this search we located and identified Prana Health as a key player in Wake County (Raleigh) that specializes in pulmonary health and has four locations.
