## Medicaid Children and Parents

As per calculations, in 2017, the percentage of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid was 79.58%, while in 2018, it was 81.12%. We have entered details pertaining to this research on this spreadsheet.

### DEFINITIONS FOR STATISTICAL PURPOSES

- Medicaid or Medical Assistance: Is the health plan that covers for people with low-income or have a disability (including children).

- Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP): Is the state-run program for low-income children whose parents do not qualify for Medicaid.

### CALCULATIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS

The children on Medicaid are divided into two categories or programs, those with at least one parent also on Medicaid and those that don't have a parent on the program (Medicaid). Therefore, CHIP is for the children whose parents are not on Medicaid. Therefore, we made an assumption that if we take the total number of children on Medicaid and subtract the total number of children on CHIP, we will get the number of children on Medicaid that had also a parent on Medicaid.

### 2017

In 2017, the total number of children on Medicaid and CHIP was 46,322,217, which was 64.6% of all Medicaid recipients, and out of this number (46,322,217), 9,460,160 children were on CHIP program, this is, they did not have at least one parent also on Medicaid. To find the number and percentage of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid, we calculated as follows:

=46,322,217 - 9,460,160 = 36,862,057 (the total number of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid)

%=(36,862,057/46,322,217 x 100) = 79.58% (the percentage of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid)

### 2018

In 2018, the total number of children on Medicaid and CHIP was 34,981,437, which was 50.6% of all Medicaid recipients. Out of this number, 6,603,272 children were on the CHIP program. To find the number and percentage of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid, we calculated as follows:

=34,981,437 - 6,603,272 = 28,378,165 (the total number of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid)

%=28,378,165/34,981,437 x 100 = 81.12% (the percentage of children on Medicaid that had at least one parent also on Medicaid)

### OTHER USEFUL CALCULATIONS

- The percentage of children on Medicaid that did not have a parent also on Medicaid (CHIP) in 2017:

=9,460,160/46,322,217 x 100 = 20.42%

- The percentage of children on Medicaid that did not have a parent also on Medicaid (CHIP) in 2018:

=6,603,272/34,981,437 x 100 = 18.88%
