US MARKET SIZE AND GROWTH FOR RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES

ADDITIONAL FINDINGS

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Strategy #1

Our first strategy was to look for non-electrical items market industry reports on sites like IBISWorld, ResearchandMarkets, Garnter among others. This strategy was unsuccessful because we could locate only one report on the landscaping services industry, which included size, growth, etc. in the United States. We had hoped that this strategy may work because industry reports publish information about key players in any given industry, and thus may have published information on the market size of non-electrical items market in the United States. However, there was no specific information on the non-electrical items market size or growth.

Strategy #2

Our next strategy was to look for information on non-electrical items/landscape association and landscape industry websites like LandScapeProfessionals, LawnandLandscape, and LawnStarter. However, this strategy also did not work because there was no information on the market size or growth of non-electrical items. Using this strategy, we did find statistics about landscape services, firms, employees, etc. We looked through websites that publish articles, and reports focusing on landscape industry and may have published this information.

Strategy #3

Our third strategy was to look for information on the websites of companies who are into non-electrical items, business. We looked for information on sites like Rosetta and Vigoro. Unfortunately, this strategy did not work because they only provide information on hardscape (part of a landscape product category) from Rosetta Hardscapes. We hoped that this strategy may work since these companies deal with the non-electrical items and may have published information about market size or growth of non-electrical items in the United States

Strategy #4

Our fourth strategy was to triangulate the information by finding information of the overall landscape supplies industry and finding the percentage for the non-electrical items supplies. We looked for information on websites like Freedoniagroup and Ceramicindustry. This strategy also did not work because the reports and the articles provided information for the overall residential landscape supplies. Therefore, we have used the information to get the market size and growth for residential landscape supplies.

CALCULATIONS

  • The demand for landscaping products in 2017 was projected to be $6.5 billion.
  • The residential market is the largest for landscaping products, accounting for 58% of sales in 2012.
  • We assume that the share of residential landscape products would be 58% in 2017 as it was in 2012 and the paid report by Freedonia also states that the residential segment is expected to maintain the growth rate because of growth in home sales. We have made this assumption due to lack of the recent sources and the mention of continuous growth of residential landscape products.
  • The US market size for residential landscape supplies = (market size of landscaping products x market share of the residential landscape supplies) (6,500,000,000 x 58%) = 3,770,000,000. Therefore, the market size of residential landscape supplies in 2017 was $3.7 Billion.
  • The landscaping products in the United States is forecast to grow 5.3% per year. We assume that the growth rate was the same for 2018 for residential landscape supplies.

US Market Size for Landscape Supplies in 2018

  • (Market size for 2017 x CAGR of landscaping products).
  • Using CAGR Calculator: Starting Value = 3,770,000,000, CAGR %= 5.3, number of periods= 1 year , future value will be = $3,969,810,000.
  • Therefore, the market size of residential landscape supplies in 2018 was $3.9 Billion.

Growth Forecast of Residential Landscape Supplies

  • The landscaping products in the United States is forecast to grow 5.3% per year to $8.2 billion in 2019.
  • Therefore, the growth forecast for residential landscape supplies market in the United States is projected to be 5.3% in 2019.
  • Using CAGR Calculator: Starting Value = $3,969,810,000 , CAGR %= 5.3, number of periods= 1 year, future value will be = $4,180,209,930.
  • Growth in Dollar figures = (Market size of 2019 Market size of 2018) = ($4,180,209,930 — $3,969,810,000) = $210,399,930.
  • Therefore, the landscaping residential landscape supplies market in the United States is projected to be $210,399,930.

WHAT INFORMATION IS NOT AVAILABLE

  • Information on the market size and the growth of the United States residential landscape supply market- non-electrical items is not available.

WHY THE INFORMATION COULD NOT BE TRIANGULATED

  • Since there are no reports that provide information on the non-electrical items like landscape fabric, plastic edgers, spikes, and plastic lower trunk tree covers, etc as the reports, articles found provide information on the overall residential landscape supply market.
  • Also, the industry reports found on residential landscape supply market which may have this information are accessible behind a paywall.

Market Leaders - Residential Landscape Supplies: United States

While we were not able to find precompiled list of five market leaders in the United States residential landscape supply market, we have used the available information to put together important findings about this industry. We have summarized our findings below.

Residential Landscaping Supplies Market US

  • "Residential landscaping primarily can be defined as the art and the practice of improving the appearance and aesthetic appeal of the area surrounding a home." Primarily, two categories of materials need to be considered when planning a landscape. These include plant materials (also referred to as softscape) consisting primarily of trees and shrubs and structural materials (also referred to as 'hardscape'), such as paving, fences, and walls.

Research Strategy:

We commenced our research by searching through various research reports on the US residential landscape supplies market from Freedonia Group, Mordor Intelligence, Market Radar, Euromonitor, Deloitte, Mckinsey, Forrester Research, among others. These industry research reports are a primary resource for the information on key industry players and at times also provide a ranked list based on revenues/market share and hence, the idea was to garner any such pre-compiled list from these reports. However, no specific reports about the US Residential Landscape supplies industry could be found. Most of the reports found were focused more on the broader industry segments like the US landscape services and total US landscape products in general, which did not furnish any relevant data. All these reports just highlighted the expected industry CAGR and market size of the overall US Landscape Supplies market with no data on key players either for the residential segment specifically or overall landscape supplies industry.
We then scoured through various media articles from Forbes, Businesswire, Bloomberg, Reuters, Live Mint; US Landscape specific blogs such as Total Landscape Care, Turf Magazine, Lawn & Landscape Magazine, Pro Landscaper; and surveys from Pew Research, Nielson, and Deloitte. We hoped to check if any information on best or leading US Residential Landscape Supplies players based on customer perception or feedback could be found. All these are potential sources where key industry players are discussed by various media houses, and hence, we decided to follow this research path. However, this did not yield any fruitful results. We were able to locate general information about US residential landscaping and its overview and mentions of certain individual residential landscaping supplies manufacturers in these sources, but again, no criteria to rank them was available.
Next, we searched through credible databases such as Hoovers, Crunchbase, Craft.io, Owler, and ZoomInfo. Also, we visited some US companies specific databases such as Census Bureau, US Company Database, Data.Gov, and B2B list databases such as Business List database, Info USA, US Company Leads, among others. The idea behind this was to check if they furnish a list of top US residential landscape supplies players or if there is any way to filter the key players in the market based on some parameters like the number of employees, locations, and revenue on these databases. However, no pertinent information could be located. Most of the information found was either for specific companies and their revenues or behind a paywall.
Going forward, we tried to triangulate the information. The idea was to try to organize the list of individual players operating in the US residential landscape supplies market or related segments found during the research from the various media articles and blogs and then try to rank them based on their revenues from their 'residential landscape' supplies segment. However, the major stumbling block that was encountered in this was the lack of any detailed financial filings or financial information about these players owing to their private nature. Also since almost all of them dealt in mostly of other categories such as commercial, construction, etc taking overall revenues from databases such as Owler, Crunchbase, etc. did not make sense as a player with overall high revenues may have a smaller revenue share from 'Residential Supplies.' I have, however, listed these as part of my useful findings. Hence, no top players list could be triangulated through this approach.
Again, we searched using other ranking parameters such as market share, sales volumes, distribution network, customer rating/perception from surveys or review websites, but no consistent information across the players could be garnered. The idea behind this strategy was to check if there is any possibility of ranking the top players on any alternative metrics. We tried to go through the filings, annual reports, presentations, etc. for the various individual players to check if they have disclosed their residential landscaping supplies' segment revenues which we can use in combination with industry size to determine the market share for the individual manufacturers, but none of the companies had such information in their filings. Only overall business description, products overview, and total company revenues could be located through this research path. Hence, no information regarding the top players could be garnered from this approach.
Lastly, we decided to expand our search to beyond 24 months. With this approach, we hoped to look for slightly older, but useful information may be in the form past surveys or research done around the topic which we can use as a proxy for the top US residential landscaping supplies manufacturers. The idea was to use the past list as a starting point and check if those companies still hold the leadership positions. However, no relevant past surveys or research reports could be located around the topic.

  • Menards' total revenue was $10 billion in 2017.

Research Strategy:

The list of the top retailers of residential landscaping supplies in the US ranked by their sales specific for these products and region could not be determined either by directly available list or triangulation. However, we have presented the top players of lawn and garden supplies as it is the most similar segment for landscaping supplies and could be used as a proxy. We used the detailed strategies below to look for the information.

We initially checked for directly available lists of leading retailers of residential landscaping products in the US through industry analysis and research reports from credible market research websites including IBISWorld, Freedonia, and Deloitte as these are primary resources for the information on key industry players and also provide a ranked list based on revenues/market share and hence the idea was to garner any of such. However, no specific reports of the US residential landscape supplies industry could be found. Most of the reports found were apropos of the broader industry segments like the US landscape services, home improvement industry, and total US landscape products in general. All these reports may contain desired data but are behind a paywall.

As our next strategy, we directed our search to various credible media sites including Forbes and Business Wire, websites specific for landscaping such as Turf Magazine, and websites dedicated to retailers including IPG and The Balance. Through these sources, we were hoping to get any hints on top/best/leading retailers in the landscaping industry. Most of the articles were addressing home improvement industry which includes landscaping and lawn and garden supplies which is a very similar term of landscaping supplies. However, these articles did not give any criteria for determining the rankings.

As our last resort, we attempted to triangulate the top players by checking annual reports and press releases. To determine the companies, we made a list of the top retailers that sell products related to landscaping. An article from IBISWorld stated that Lowe's, Home Depot, and Menards are top 3 retailers of home improvement industry. According to the report, lawn and garden supplies are one of the product lines of these industries. In another report from IPG, Lowe's and Home Depot are the top players in lawn and garden products followed by Walmart and Sears and they comprise 75% market share of the industry in the US. We assumed that these companies have product lines related to residential landscaping, therefore we scoured these companies' annual reports, websites, and press releases to determine the sales specific to the desired products and region (US). But the search was unsuccessful as these retailers operate in one/more countries apart from the US and their financial data includes the total sales for all of their locations and also have a wide range of product lines.

The unavailability of the desired data may be due to the niche nature of the research, while top retailers have a wide range of product lines, and also the fragmented nature of the industry due to its many small key players that operate in the same segment.

Industry Insights and Trends - Residential Landscape Supplies: United States

Mesmerizing metals, low-maintenance landscapes, permeable paving for sustainability, lawns to attract millennials, and including edible plants in landscape designs are the five industry trends in the United States residential landscape supply market in general.

INDUSTRY TRENDS — U.S. RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE SUPPLY MARKET

1. Mesmerizing Metals

  • Metals, as a part of residential landscape design, provides the homeowners an option of a bold statement or whimsical touch in their homes, by using them as decorative art, furniture, and accessories or water features.
  • Metals, such as steel and iron can be used in landscape designing either as lovely accents or as an entire focal point of the yard.

2. Low-Maintenance Landscapes

  • According to the 2018 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), low-maintenance landscapes have an 80% consumer demand among landscape project types.
  • Low-maintenance landscapes are among the current trends because the majority of homeowners, no matter what their age is, have no time to care for their landscapes.
  • One of the very common low-maintenance landscape ideas includes using mulch as a quick and easy solution to manage yards and gardens.
  • Mulch is highly portable, malleable, greatly reduces the watering needs, and also prevents weeds from growing, making it easier to maintain and care for landscapes and yards.
  • A low-maintenance landscaping trend also includes the usage of rocks, concrete, pavers, and natural plants such as Phlox, Brass Buttons, and Vinca Minor for large scale groundcovers.

3. Permeable Paving for Sustainability

  • Permeable paving has a 74% consumer demand among landscape project types in the US and ranks 2nd among the most popular sustainable elements category.
  • Permeable paving is one of the excellent options for homeowners who are concerned about water conservation and sustainability at their home.
  • Some of the benefits of permeable paving are managing storm-water, runoff and pollution prevention, groundwater supply replenishment, and other unique permeable design options.
  • Some stone paver choices for permeable paving that are maintenance-free includes bricks, sandstone, flagstone, limestone, and concrete.

4. Lawns to Attract Millennials

  • Using lawn for residential landscape designs will greatly help to attract younger generations like millennials as they start to become homeowners themselves.
  • Millennials between the age of 18 and 34 currently make up 29% of all gardening households, which is considered a high record.
  • The size of the lawn was the top feature priority of millennials and younger generations when they considered buying a house, which even beats an updated kitchen.

5. Edible Plants in Landscape Design

  • Another U.S. residential landscape supply trend which was among the top official list of trends by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) for 2019 include incorporating edible plants in landscape design.
  • Although it's not a new trend, increasing number of U.S. homeowners such as those with limited yard space are starting to mix edible plants that complement their landscape design through the use of containers and traditional landscape beds.

YOUR RESEARCH TEAM APPLIED THE FOLLOWING STRATEGY:

Despite a comprehensive search, we were unable to identify industry trends for the United States residential landscape supply market that includes landscape fabric, plastic edgers, spikes, plastic lower trunk tree covers, and other similar supplies that are non-electrical items. However, we did find five industry trends in the United States residential landscape supply market in general. These trends cover the entire market and do not focus on non-electrical items.

The following strategies were deployed to identify the required data:

We began our research by looking for precompiled information on reputed sources such as National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and Association of Professional Landscape Designers, among others. Here, we only found survey reports and trend reports about the landscape industry in general.

Subsequently, we analyzed the two general landscape trend reports from the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Here, we discovered the five trends in the U.S. residential landscape supply market — mesmerizing metals, low-maintenance landscapes, permeable paving for sustainability, lawn to attract millennials, and edible plants in landscape design. However, they are not specific to non-electrical items.

As our last resort, we tried to triangulate the data by analyzing each non-electrical item in the residential landscape industry and find trends related to it. We used trade media sources such as Lawn and Landscape, Garden Design, Landscaping Network, Builder Online, Total Landscape Care, and Improve Net, among others and business research source such as Freedonia Group. However, we did not find anything relevant. We only found lists of recommended brands for residential landscape supplies in the US and a report on "Landscaping Products" from Freedonia Group which is behind a paywall.

To conclude, there is not enough information in the public domain focusing on non-electrical items in the residential landscape supply market and their trends. We believe reports are yet to be published on specific segments in the said supply market.
