What is the market size for ski goggles and, separately, for ski helmets in the US, and what is the projected growth? In both $ amount and sales numbers, if possible.
Hello, and thanks for your question about the market for ski goggles and, separately, for ski helmets in the US, the market size and projected growth. I have estimated that annually around $138.41 million worth of ski goggles are being sold. Unit sales of ski helmets in 2016 is calculated to be around 4.16 million. Below you will find a deep dive into my research, along with all the details as to how I came to this conclusion.
METHODOLOGY
In order to answer your question thoroughly I have looked for data and reports published recently giving numbers in both dollar values as well as sales numbers. I have researched this separately for ski goggles as well as ski helmets.
OVERVIEW
The entire ski equipment industry is expected to reach a value of $5.7 billion by 2020. This is expected to be a representation of CAGR growth of 1.19% from 2016 to 2020. Factors driving this growth will be the Winter Olympics in 2018, as well as ski resort development as well as established ski regions such as Europe and North America.
SKI GOGGLES
I have found that during the 2007/08 season, snow sports shops in the United States sold goggles worth a total of $93.68 million. This is the most recent figure available for this. Therefore I have sought to make a calculation to estimate what sales may have been in 2016 and what they might be in the future. I have taken the annual growth rate of 5% and have applied this to 2007's figure of $93.68 million, I have calculated this annually and below I have displayed the estimations for market value for 2016 and 2020:
2016 - $138.41 million
2020 - $168.24 million
I then decided to do a back of the envelope calculation to figure out the amount of goggles sold. I looked for statistics regarding the average price of ski goggles. When I concluded that there is no figure for this published online I took a look at the prices of ski goggles on SportsDirect and calculated the average price by taking the total cost of every goggle and dividing it by the number of unique goggles for sale.
£1067/43 = £24.81
£24.81 converts to around $30.29
I then divided the total estimated revenue from 2016 by this average price, $138.41 million/$30.29 is around 4,569,495 pairs of goggles.
Clearly, this estimate is the middle of the range as I did not have access to how many people buy high-end expensive goggles versus low-end goggles.
SKI HELMETS
One article tells us that as of 2010 annual sales of ski helmets in terms of units sold was at 1.2 million, an increase of 23% on the previous year. Reports of sales of ski helmets soaring in popularity is supported by this report published in the British newspaper, The Telegraph. While exact figures for 2016 and beyond are not freely available online, I have taken the 23% statistic from 2010 and applied it to the annual sales of 1.2 million to give the following estimates for sales in 2016 and 2020.
2016 - 4.16 million
2020 - 9.51 million
These estimates are rough as based on the assumption that the increase in sales has and will remain at 23%.
After a thorough search I can confirm that information regarding the dollar value of this industry is not freely available, however I did find a report available to purchase here.
CONCLUSION
It is calculated that sales of ski goggles for 2016 totaled to around $138.41 million. As for ski helmets I have calculated that potentially 4.16 million were sold in 2016. Further information may be found in purchasable reports for which I have provided links to.
