Who are the major business coaching schools and how successful are they?
Hello! It is my pleasure to respond to your query in providing you with information on the major business coaching schools in the US.
We’ll begin some general background information on this market in the US – both where it is currently and where it’s expected to go. Then, we’ll look at the main credentialing body for business (and other) coaching schools/programs/individuals – the ICF (International Coach Federation). Then, we’ll get into the meat of the findings with detailed information about each of the 11 schools/programs that experts agree are the “best in the US”.
BACKGROUND ON BUSINESS COACHING IN THE US
IBISWorld notes that the Business Coaching Market in the US brings in annual revenue of around $11 B, and saw 2.6% growth from 2011 – 2016. According to Forbes, business coaching “is currently gaining tremendous traction” and present supply of these coaches is currently well below the market demand. Business coaches can either be individuals or working with a small or large coaching and/or consulting firm. In this market, the fastest growing segment is for e-coaches. IBISWorld notes that this “industry relies heavily on demand from its largest market, the middle and senior management of US corporations, which left it vulnerable to declining corporate profit. Following a period where businesses cut back on nonessential expenses, including employee business coaching programs, the industry has flourished”.
INTERNATIONAL COACH FEDERATION
The main accrediting body of business coaching programs/schools is the ICF (International Coach Federation), which also accredits individual coaches. This leading global organization sets very high standards that accredited schools/programs (and individual coaches) must be. To learn more about the ICF, I’ve provided this link.
If you’d like a complete list of ICF-certified Executive Coaching Programs, you can find the complete list here. If you’d like a complete list of ICF-certified Business Coaching Programs, you can find the complete list here. If you’d like a complete list of ICF-certified Leadership Coaching Programs, you can find the complete list here. Each of these falls within “business coaching” so I included them all for you.

For ease in comparison, I have included all relevant information on a spreadsheet. The schools/programs detailed on the spreadsheet include those listed below (provided in order from most expensive to least expensive):
1. Columbia University Coaching Certification Program
2. Hudson Institute Professional Certification in Individual and Organization Coaching
3. The Coaches Training Institute’s CPCC Certification Program
4. Fielding Graduate University Evidence-Based Coaching Certification Program
5. Georgetown University Center for Continuing and Professional Education Certificate in Leadership Coaching
6. New Ventures West Professional Coaching Course
7. Newfield Institute Coaching for Professional and Personal Mastery
8. University of Texas at Dallas Executive and Professional Graduate Certificate Coaching Program
9. iPEC Coach Training Program
10. Coach U Core Essentials Program Advanced Coaching Program
11. Coach Academy International Coach Certification Program
The information provided on these schools/programs comes from a variety of sources (listed on the spreadsheet), though the list itself was confirmed as the major US schools/programs by two sources, including CompassionInPolitics (2012) and CoachAcademyInternational (2016). No other “top” or “best” lists could be located, and there were no other comparisons of schools available, despite a very deep dive.
Additionally, I could find no reviews and/or ratings sites that ranked these schools/programs or provided insights into whether students found them to be top-notch. I based the Measures of Success on information taken from the schools’/programs’ sites – including awards, college rankings, history, number of graduates, etc. This was difficult to do because very little information was publicly-available on the success of these programs. It is my hope that the information provided is enough for your needs.
