What are luxury Beauty companies, like MAC, Sephora, Makeup Forever, Bobbi Brown, and Charlotte Tilbury offering to their Beauty Sales staff and Makeup artists in terms of Learning and Development programs? What types of ongoing training/education are available? How does their increased knowledge/expertise get recognized?
Hello! Thank you for your question about luxury beauty companies and what they are offering to their staff and makeup artists in terms of learning and development programs. In short, most of the companies you inquired about have opportunities for learning and developing with rewards included. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
First, we went to the company website of each company you mentioned and looked for more information there in regards to their learning, development, and continuing education programs. Next, we looked at online articles and Linkedin to see what additional information we could obtained. More information was available for longer-running companies such as Sephora in comparison to Charlotte Tilbury, which was just launched in 2013. After that, we googled keywords in regards to more specific details.
SEPHORA
Sephora has Sephora University where makeup artists and staff learn about different kinds of makeup and how they work and where to apply them. Sephora fosters an environment of constant learning where "through Sephora 101, Daily Dose training, on-site and online training modules, career-path plans…you’ll become an authority at what you do and grow into what you want to be." In return for their fantastic skills, Sephora employees are eligible for monetary bonuses and incentives, offering free Sephora products and discounts with brand partners. Their devotion to employee training can also be seen in this Linkedin job posting for Manager of Learning & Development.
MAC
MAC offers the MAC Pro Membership program which is "the industry's leading preferred customer program for the makeup professional" and provides unique educational experiences and a wide selection of professional makeup. This exclusive membership also allows for dialogue with other professionals and invitation to Pro-Only events. For those that have not graduated from a beauty college, they have a Pro Student Membership as well. Further details on the events and people MAC Pros could meet can be found here.
MAC Cosmetics is part of Estee Lauder Company which gives out ELC Assignments to employees. ELC Assignments include short-term projects to meet internal needs, Stretch Projects which stretch out the week by adding a few hours to your current workload, job swaps for a short duration, and job shares in order to promote flexibility and continuity. In return for their expertise and business prowess, employees are offered free products especially during new product launches, employee discounts, and other free items and training opportunities.
MAKEUP FOREVER
Makeup Forever has both Makeup Mastery classes which cover a wide variety of group courses and Makeup School which takes you step-by-step through the basics of makeup and application. You can find a list of all Makeup Mastery classes coming up here, including Summer Skin and New Party Perfect. Makeup School lessons including Focus and Complete lessons can be found here and can last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
Makeup Forever has a network of professional academies all over the world that specialize in a variety of beauty and customized makeup training. TV & Cinema Makeup is another of their specialties and there is an academy for that, too. It does not appear as though they have any sort of recognition program in place for their employees.
BOBBI BROWN
Bobbi Brown is part of the Estee Lauder Company alongside MAC, therefore their employees are also offered ELC Assignments in order to further their education and training. Although not much is known about their internal employee learning and development programs, Bobbi Brown has managed to partner with two colleges to provide further education in Beauty. At Montclair State University they offer a Makeup Artistry Certificate Program where courses are taught in the Bobbi Brown Studios. Secondly, at Emerson College, they have created the Bobbi Brown Program in Makeup Artistry. According to employee reviews, they are given free items, but there is not much available regarding the rewards employees earn for continuing education.
CHARLOTTE TILBURY
Charlotte Tilbury is a fairly new company but already has an exclusive program in place for accredited makeup professionals. The benefits of this program include a 30% discount, invitation to pro master classes and events, as well as helpful tips and techniques.
It is clear they do keep their employees educated by the presence of Global Education Manager Asiya Rasheed. There is little known about employee incentives or rewards for furthering education, even looking through employee reviews. However, the company itself has won many awards over the past few years including Commendation for Best Entrant and Best Youtube Channel.
CONCLUSION
To wrap up, many of the makeup companies you inquired about have opportunities for continuing education or training in addition to providing incentives or gratis for a job well done. Although we were unable to find sufficient information for Charlotte Tilbury, I hope you feel your curiosity has been sated in regards to the other four companies.
