The short version is that there are many English-speaking boarding schools worldwide specializing in teaching children with social communication disorders. Since you are looking for schools worldwide and outside of the East coast and are especially interested in schools in the UK, as well as Europe, and the U.S. (outside of the East coast). The schools we have included provide students with opportunities to enhance their academic, social and executive functioning thus helping them to become successful and productive in the future. English-speaking Boarding Schools in the U.K.


1. Aurora Eccles School is "an independent day and boarding school providing specialist education for students aged 7 to 18 who have found learning difficult in other mainstream school environments." Students may attend Aurora Eccles School because of specific learning disabilities around dyslexia and moderate learning difficulties to those with higher needs and complexities such as interaction and communication difficulties resulting from Asperger’s Syndrome. Aurora Eccles School's vision is to empower uniqueness and their aim is to "ensure young people are prepared for their future." They focus on building self-esteem and confidence by supporting the students' individual learning needs, as well as developing their social and independence skills.

Aurora Eccles School is set on 28 acres of countryside in Quidenham, near Norwich. Some of their services and facilities include: small class sizes and high staff to student ratios, integrated therapy, individualized tuition and support, extensive outdoor recreation areas, and specialist classrooms for science, drama, music, and art. They also provide numerous opportunities for extracurricular activities and trips.

2. Alderwasley Hall School provides specialized education to children and young people, aged 5-19 "with speech, language and communication needs and/or Asperger's Syndrome and/or Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)." Alderwasley Hall states they have "one of the largest on-site team of HCPC registered Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists" (Senadgroup, 2017) that provides an environment where the children feel confident, valued, and safe. The personalized, language-rich environment helps students feel supported to develop their social communication skills. Alderwasley Hall School is in Derbyshire, close to the towns of Matlock, Belper and Wirksworth.

Senad Group, whom Alderwasley Hall School is through, also has other schools in the U.K., however I chose not to include them, as they focus more on children with severe learning disabilities and/or behavioral problems. English-speaking Boarding Schools in the U.S.

1. Brehm Preparatory School is small, family-style, fully accredited, not-for-profit coeducational boarding school for students aged 12-18 with learning disabilities or differences. The school limits its focus to just 90 students and fosters a family environment. Students enrolled at Brehm's Preparatory School come with a variety of challenges to social, academic, or emotional success including, ADHD, Non-verbal Learning Disability (NLD), Communication Disorders, and Tourette Syndrome, to name a few. Brehm’s faculty and staff are specially trained to educate students with nonverbal learning disability challenges. In recognition of the Brehm Preparatory School's specialized and effective program, the U.S. Department of Education awarded the school named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Brehm also "participates in and contributes to numerous scientific conferences around the world that relate to education, learning disabilities, and technology." Brehm Preparatory School is located in Carbondale, Illinois.

3. T.C. Harris School provides services for students with different kinds of needs, a few of them including Communication Needs, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Behavioral Disorders, and Neurological Disorders for ages 6-21. Students who attend T.C. Harris can either reside on campus in dorms, in residential group home program, or with their families. The dorms are furnished shared rooms, "connected to bright and open gathering areas where the students participate in social, recreational, and therapeutic groups." Their special therapy and staff include certified speech language pathologists, clinical therapists, and licensed occupational therapists, who help students in many areas, such as perception, integrative skills, communicative skills, and adaptive living skills. T.C. Harris is in Lafayette, Indiana.

4. Boulder Creek Academy is a therapeutic boarding school with a state-approved special education program. The students are aged 13-18. The school is co-educational and "allows boys and girls to experience school and a social life through co-ed and same-sex activities." Boulder Creek Academy is a 180-acre campus, located at the base of the Cabinet Mountains in north Idaho. The academy provides services for students with a variety of needs, such as learning challenges, depression/anxiety, non-verbal learning disorder, and rigid thinking. "Classroom instruction is built within the framework of brain-based learning, incorporating strategies to enhance executive functioning, working memory, communication, and efficiency skills" (Boulder Creek Academy, 2017). Students learn how to communicate effectively within the community.

5. Heartspring School is a private, not-for-profit school serving students aged 5-21. They provide services for a variety of students, some of which include students impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder, Students with severe, challenging, aggressive or self-injurious behavior, and students who may not be able to communicate verbally, requiring Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)devices, or communication books, etc. With regard to tuition, "The majority of the students who attend Heartspring are placed through the students’ IEP teams and funded by their local school district." They have both an intensive program and a day only program. In the intensive program, students live on campus, whereas the students enrolled in the day only program return to their home each day. In the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is used for students who have limited functional communication to increase their communication skills.

Conclusion

To wrap it up, we searched for English-speaking boarding schools worldwide for children with social communications disorders, with a focus on schools in the U.S., excluding the East Coast, Europe, and the U.K. We found seven schools fitting your desired criteria, five schools located in the U.S. and two schools located in the U.K. All the schools offer co-educational programs, though they did not provide the female to male ratio, and all the schools serve students with a variety of educational needs, including communicative disorders.
