Looking for a database of all wealth management firms in Europe that shows total assets under management, number of advisors, etc...
Hello there! Thank you for your question. I understand that you are looking for a database of all weath management firms in Europe that shows total assets under management, number of advisors, etc. The short version is that after searching extensively through corporate websites, trusted media sites, and industry reports, I’ve determined that the information you requested is not publicly available because in Europe, wealth management firms don't need to register with any bodies, thus leading to an absence of a European database for these firms. However, I was able to find several numbered lists of global and European wealth managers, and also discovered that RockBlack, Vanguard Group, and LGIM consistently rank high on wealth manager lists based on assets under management.
Below you will find a deep dive of my research and methodology.
METHODOLOGY
- I began my search with a simple Google search for a European wealth management firm database. This led me to the International Wealth Management Industry Database, which is a list compiled by Highworth Research of 2,200 firms globally. It includes a sector for Europe/Middle East/Africa, along with some pertinent details for each firm, but the report must be purchased, and is not comprehensive.
- My next Google search string was "List + wealth management firms + Europe". This led me to a table which gave me top 120 wealth management firms in Europe, and a list which provided the top 50 asset managers globally. Both the documents gave no statistics for number of advisors, only providing statistics regarding assets under management. The latter document would have to be filtered through to identify the European entries.
- In an attempt to get hard data which matches your criteria, my next Google search string was "List + wealth management firms + Europe + number of advisors" This led me to a list of 400 top asset managers globally. Similar to the previous documents, this one would also need to be filtered for European entries. Also, this document only provided statistics for assets under management, and no other data is included.
- Another one of my Google search strings "Database + Europe + wealth management", provided me with links to specific wealth management firms.
- I changed my approach to the request after the above-mentioned searches, and started looking into whether or not European wealth management firms have to register with some sort of government entity, similar to firms in the U.S. filing the ADV with the SEC; however, I could find no sources support this, and no government agency seemingly responsible for regulating these firms in Europe.
- I performed a more general search for regulations for wealth management firms in Europe and found nothing helpful. I searched the corporate websites for BlackRock and Legal General Investment Management (the # 1 and # 2 asset management firms in Europe), to see if I could find any evidence of them registering with any type of entity or database, but could not find anything helpful. I then searched for registered firms in Europe as well as a general search for the number of firms in Europe, and was led to no useful information.
HELPFUL FINDINGS
While I could not find a direct answer to your question, I was able to gather some information about this topic, which I think will be helpful.
INTERNATIONAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY DATABASE
- Highworth Research provides a global database of wealth management institutions across 3 regions: the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europe/Middle East/Africa.
- Page 2 of the report lists data included, such as types of companies included, assets under management, directors and senior management, etc. Updates are added regularly, so although this is not a comprehensive list, more institutions are frequently added.
TOP 120 EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONAL MANAGERS TABLE 2016
- This table, published by IPE Reference Hub, provides a list of the top 120 wealth management firms in Europe for the year 2016, along with assets under management. However, it does not provide other data that you are interested in.
- Please note that this is not the comprehensive list that you wanted because only the top 120 firms are included in the table.
- BlackRock and Legal General Investment Management ranked first and second respectively on the list.
TOP ASSET MANAGEMENT FIRMS
Relbanks provided us with a list of top 50 global asset managers on the basis of assets under management. Please note that the list provides no additional data.
- Another thing to be noted is that this is not a comprehensive list, and it must be filtered through to identify the entries that are from Europe.
IPE's TOP 400 ASSET MANAGERS 2016
- Please note that since it's a global list, it must be filtered through to identify the entries from Europe. The list only provides data for assets under management.
POSSIBLE CONTINUED RESEARCH
In understanding what types of information are and are not publicly available on this topic, I’ve suggested and alternative route you may be interested in researching:
Given that despite searching thoroughly, I could not find any hard data about the number of advisors in wealth managements firms, you could drop that criteria from the search, and focus solely on assets under management.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, after searching extensively through corporate websites, trusted media sites, and industry reports, a direct answer to your question is not publicly available because in Europe, wealth management firms don't need to register with any bodies, thus leading to an absence of a European database for these firms. However, I learned that RockBlack, Vanguard Group, and LGIM consistently rank high on wealth manager lists based on assets under management. If you’d like to continue research on any of the other topics I’ve outlined above, just let us know!
