LGBTQA Non-Profits

Ten non-profit and charity organizations in the United States that are geared toward supporting the LBGTQA community in the U.S. are Openhouse, The Attic Youth Center, the Point Foundation, PFLAG, Affirmations, the New Conservatory Theatre Center, the Transgender Law Center, GLAD, Equality Florida, and the New York City Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. Ten non-profit and charity organizations that are geared toward supporting the LBGTQA community globally are Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; OutRight Action International; the International Lesbian and Gay Association; the International Federation for Human Rights; the Equal Rights Trust; Gender DynamiX; ARC International; All Out; and Global Action for Trans Equality. Openhouse

  • The website for Openhouse can be found here.
  • Its mission is to enable "San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQ seniors to overcome the unique challenges they face as they age by providing housing, direct services and community programs."
  • The organization offers community engagement programs, wellness services, resource and housing navigation, and training and transformation programs.

The Attic Youth Center

  • The website for The Attic Youth Center can be found here.
  • Its mission is to create "opportunities for LGBTQ youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community, and promotes the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society."
  • Programs include the Life Skills Center offers activity groups, life coaching, summer internship opportunities, mentoring, leadership development, and computer use.
  • Supportive services include HIV prevention, counseling services, support groups, and case management.
  • Community engagement and social programs are also a part of The Attic Youth Center offerings.

Point Foundation

  • The website for the Point Foundation can be found here.
  • Its mission is to empower "promising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential — despite the obstacles often put before them — to make a significant impact on society."
  • Programs offered by the Point Foundation include scholarship, mentoring, leadership, community service, and internship programs.

PFLAG

  • The website for PFLAG can be found here.
  • Its mission is to "build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ people."
  • Programs offered by PFLAG include chapter support, advocacy, inclusion grants, scholarships, safe schools, and education.

Affirmations

  • The website for Affirmations can be found here.
  • Its mission is to provide "a welcoming space where people of all sexual orientations, gender identities & expressions, and cultures can find support and unconditional acceptance, and where they can learn, grow, socialize and feel safe."
  • Programs and services offered by Affirmations include community spaces, community activities and events, health and wellness services, support and discussion groups, youth programs, and an exhibition and performance space.

New Conservatory Theatre Center

  • Its mission is to "champion innovative, high-quality productions and educational theatre experiences for youth, artists, and the queer and allied communities to effect personal and societal growth, enlightenment and change."
  • Programs offered by the New Conservatory Theatre Center include conservatory training, drama exploration, scholarships, and YouthAware.

Transgender Law Center

  • Its mission is to change "law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression."

GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)

Equality Florida

  • Its mission is to pass "local LGBTQ protections at the municipal level, pass a statewide non-discrimination law, pass a statewide anti-bullying law, pass legislation to protect the transgender community, and change public opinion in the state of Florida regarding LGBT individuals and families."
  • Programs offered by Equality Florida include adoption assistance, discrimination assistance, family recognition, gun violence prevention, hate crime prevention, HIV advocacy, marriage assistance, safe and healthy schools, and voter mobilization.

The New York City Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project

  • Its mission is to empower "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and supports survivors through counseling and advocacy."
