I would like to know who the top Udemy instructors are.
Hello! Thank you for your question on the top Udemy instructors by number of students and courses. You can find a top 25 list of instructors by students (first tab) and courses (second tab) here.
METHODOLOGY
Udemy does not allow for searches of instructors based on the needed filters, i.e. number of students and courses, so at first I based my list on the top earning instructors. While there is a slight positive correlation between these list and the number of students, these resources tend to be older than 2015. Also, some of the instructors featured in these lists were no longer posting their courses on Udemy (for example, Alun Hill).
Luckily, I was able to find a site that scraped the almost all of the entire Udemy course catalog (the top 500 most subscribed courses across 14 different categories) along with their enrollment numbers and authors. From this, I was able to download their database (which you can find on the fourth tab of the Google Spreadsheet titled "Total Course List") and by use of a pivot table, filter out the number of courses and students each instructor had. From there, it was a simple filtering of highest to lowest to find the top 25 (you can find the complete list of instructors with the students and courses on the third tab titled "Total Instructor List") .
It should be noted that this data is from early 2016, so the numbers shown in the"Total Course" and "Total Instructor" databases are not updated. Also, the number of students tends to be lower in their 2017 version than their 2016, its unclear as to why this is. Nevertheless, the final tallies on the first 2 tabs are updated with the most recent numbers from Udemy as of this writing, with a link to the relevant Instructor page.
RESULTS
The final spreadsheet can be found here. The first tab labeled "# of Students" lists the top 25 Udemy instructors by number of enrolled students (which includes free users); the second tab labeled "# of Courses" lists the top 25 Udemy instructors by number of courses offered (some are on both lists, but most are different).
The third tab labeled "Total Instructor List" is the total number of instructors available in the database with their relevant number of enrolled students and courses offered. The final tab labeled "Total Course List" is the full list of top 500 courses from 14 categories.
