Do you know any phone system which has support PIn numbers for an “Express service Code” - i.e., a website visiting customer of mine gets a random number that we provide via our website, so that they can call our customer support center? This is for Google Domain Admins-- I want to know where I can get that for my customers: https://www.evernote.com/l/ALnfkwk9sslMXohUzFXZqry6lCZ1D9K3JiEB/image.png
Hello and thank you for your question on finding a service for your website where a customer will receive a random number and enter a pin when they call your customer support center. In short authentication by SMS code isn't available directly through a phone system or service, but I found several providers that can put code on your website and two companies that are subscriber based SMS code generators for caller authentication.
METHODOLOGY
I began by researching G Suite and learning about the functionality and purposes for the PIN in receiving customer service. I then searched articles and phone services, as well as software products for similar services that are commercially available for businesses.
"Sign in to the support section of your Admin console with your super administrator account.
Click Get PIN.
A PIN will be generated.
The PIN will be valid for 60 minutes after which you can generate a new one if needed."
"This information applies to administrators of G Suite Business and G Suite domains (includes special editions for schools, nonprofits, and government agencies)." Only paid and special edition G Suite subscribers receive this option. For free versions there is no PIN option available, or opportunity to directly contact support by phone.
FINDINGS
I was unable to find any phone services that provide this service for businesses as a primary function but I found several authentication and pin generation software platforms that can be integrated with existing systems. I have included the companies and pricing that I found, where available, for these companies.
Nexmo works by having a customer request a PIN when they log into a website, the program generates and send the single use code, for example by text message, and the code is entered by the user. Nexmo pricing for the U.S. is advertised at $0.0061 per code sent.
"Boost verification success. Deliver verification codes over the fastest routes determined by Verify in real-time. Verify automatically resends a code and failsover to voice if needed."
Checkmobi offers SMS authentication for many U.S. mobile carriers. You must have a basic subscription of $15.00 per month to use this service, then a fee of $0.0046 applies to sms codes sent.
"What makes our SMS verification stronger than our competitors in the "Multiple Carrier" support which allows Checkmobi to expose to you two different global SMS providers. Configure them in round-robin fashion for fallback or whether which of them to be setup as "Primary SMS Provider" on each country based on real time analytics of cost and success rate."
Twilio and other software companies provide code languages which can be used by developers to put authentication functionality into websites. The access described below is for websites, and might be useful if the functionality provides access to your customer service number online.
"User visits verification web page and enters phone number.
Random verification code is generated and user is called and prompted to enter code.
If code is entered incorrectly, re-prompt to enter code.
If code is entered correctly, update database.
Update web page with status message." This set of code can now also be used to set up an authentication code sent by SMS. Developers must add lines of computer code to the website.
A deeper search of the companies above led to finding Nexmo competitors such as Plivio but these companies develop SMS and API to contact and communicate with customers, without the functionality you requested, which is providing a verification code for users.
CONCLUSION
SMS verification codes automated to customers to verify their identity when calling is not a feature offered by the phone services themselves. There are a few ways to add that functionality, one is by adding lines of computer code directly into a website with programs such as Twilio. Two subscription services exist that charge per successful code text sent, and both appear to integrate with existing websites and national mobil phone carriers.
