Hi! Thank you for your question about converting a food truck into a salon. The short version is that yes, it is possible to convert a mobile trailer into a luxurious space to provide clients with salon services. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings. METHODOLOGY & FINDINGS I searched through corporate websites to find the information necessary to answer your question. I began my search by getting a good understanding of the size of food trucks by looking through trucks that are currently available for sale. Food trucks come in a variety of sizes, ranging from a 25-foot school bus to an 8-foot latch and pull trailer; but the average size seems to be about 20 feet long. However, instead of looking too deep into used food trucks, I changed directions by looking up movie set makeup trailers. I thought this made sense so you could avoid having to remove the kitchen appliances and they would already be styled accordingly. The smallest movie set makeup trailer I could find was a 26-foot trailer that accommodates four workstations. Next, I wanted to figure out if any mobile salons currently exist in the United States. I was unsure of your location, so I searched the five largest cities in the country to see what I could find. NEW YORK CITY There are a number of mobile spas in New York City that will travel to a home, office or hotel to provide their salon services. My Spa 2 Go is an on-demand spa company that provides various services to a home, office or any destination of your choice. They are also offering select mobile services in Los Angeles and London. LOS ANGELES Colvon is a mobile nail salon that can be booked to one’s home or office but they also have a pop-up schedule. On Thursdays and Sundays, they show up at a set location and accept walk-in clients.
Located in Orange County, The Nail Truck is another example of a mobile nail salon service that will travel to you or you can meet them at a scheduled location throughout the week. CHICAGO Total Perfection Nail Spa on Wheels is a mobile nail salon that provides manicures and pedicures from their spa on wheels. They turned a 25-passenger bus into a full-service nail salon that can accommodate two and seat three more in the waiting area.
Chop Chop is another example of a mobile salon in Chicago. A 26-foot trailer was turned into a salon with four workstations and three sinks for hair washing; they will travel to your location or provide their services from their full-service mobile salon.
JOOJ Blow Dry is an airstream turned mobile blow dry bar. They offer bookings to your specific location and a variety of pop-up locations throughout the Chicago area. HOUSTON Hair & There, based in Katy (just outside of Houston) is an airstream that has been turned into a very extensive hair salon. They have a resting location in Katy or will drive to you for a fee and a mileage charge.
Salon on The Go is another mobile hair salon that offers full service from a 30-foot RV turned spa. From haircuts to coloring, this salon has what your hair needs and will travel to you for $1 per mile. PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia has a lot of mobile salons that will travel to your home to provide you with select spa services. However, I did not find any mobile salons that were based and operated from a truck/trailer. CONCLUSION Food trucks come in a variety of sizes and I am confident that you would be able to find one large enough to convert into a luxurious spa on wheels. According to my research, the market is seemingly just beginning and strongest in Los Angeles and Chicago. These salons are able to charge twice for their services just for the convenience of their accessibility. Thank you for using Wonder! Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
