1. Texas Tech University — EdD in Educational Leadership Program

What Makes This Program Top:

  • Texas Tech's Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership program is a top hybrid college degree program in the U.S. because it was ranked among "Top 5 Doctorate in Educational Leadership" programs by The Best Schools.
  • The program is also a top hybrid college degree program because it was ranked seventh in the list of the "40 Best Online PhDs in Education 2019."

Model for Delivering the Program:

Program Format (Online or In-Person):

Partnership Opportunities:

  • The program has built-in partnership opportunities through its "doctoral summer institutes" which provide "opportunities for students to meet, work, and collaborate."
  • Partnership opportunities might also exist from the fact that "Texas Tech University is a member of the Carnegie Project for the Educational Doctorate (CPED) and utilizes CPED principles and a National Consortium of CPED Universities to meet the complex needs of school leaders."
  • A likely reason why there are few partnership opportunities discussed is that students must be employed, as is stated in the Enrollment Process section below, which could reduce the emphasis on partnership opportunities compared to degree programs that don't require the same (e.g. undergraduate degree programs).

Instructor Types:

  • This program's curriculum is taught by a team of seven professors, all of whom hold doctorate degrees and specialize in various areas of education.

Enrollment Process:

  • The enrollment process consists of completing the College of Education's Graduate School's online application.
  • Applying to the program also requires applicants to submit a "resume, personal statement of interest, GRE scores, [three] professional recommendations, [and a] response to [the] EDLD Problem of Practice prompt."

  • The program's in-person classes meet at Ball State's campus in Muncie, Indiana, and in other areas in and around Indianapolis.

Legal Structures Surrounding the Program:

  • The program is part of Ball State University's Teacher's College, which is part of Ball State University's Department of Educational Studies.

Program Format (Online or In-Person):

Partnership Opportunities:

  • Ball State University's Teachers College (which the program is part of) provides the following statement referencing partnership opportunities: "We value our ties to our community as much as we do our students. Through our research centers, labs, student services, school partnerships, and more, we work closely with our partners while creating opportunities for our students."
  • The Teachers College also provides the following statement referencing partnership opportunities with Ball State alumni: "Our alumni and other supporters are vital to our ability to support future generations of educators. . . . We offer events and other opportunities . . . to stay connected to Ball State."

Instructor Types:

  • It's not expressly stated who the instructors are for this program. However, it's reasonable to assume that the program's curriculum is taught by Ball State's Department of Educational Studies faculty, especially considering that the Program Director is part of that staff.

Enrollment Process:

  • The program's enrollment process operates through two enrollment cycles, with application deadlines of July 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.

Research Strategy

Our first step in identifying two top hybrid college degree programs in the U.S. was to look for lists of degree-program rankings. In so doing, we found a list of the top online PhD programs for educators. Within that list, a few of the degree programs were hybrid programs. The two degree programs we selected were the two highest-ranking hybrid degree programs within that list. After identifying those hybrid degree programs, we then looked for the requested information about each program. Most of that information was discussed on the degree programs' websites. Information about primary demographics was very sparse, but we included all the relevant information pertaining to that category that we found throughout our research.
