Top 10 Law Firms Hirees

Nine out of ten law firms analyzed in this request view prospect hires based on where they graduated. Many hires come from New York University and Columbia University. Additionally, many of these law firms have diversity programs and fellowships that recent graduates can join. Participating in these programs usually leads to a job in the near future. More detailed information regarding some recruitment processes that the top 10 use is found below and in the attached document.

CRAVATH, SWAINE & MOORE LLP

This firm is considered number one on Vault Law's list of prestigious firms for the year 2018. In addition to hiring from top law schools, Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP hiring "talented students from a wide array of law schools across the U.S. and Canada." During 2016, they have interviewed and recruited in universities like Columbia, Georgetown, NYU, Stanford, Michigan, Chicago, North Carolina, Duke, Harvard, and Yale. Out of hundreds of recently admitted associates and clerks, around 40% come from Columbia or New York University.

WACHTELL, LIPTON, ROSEN & KATZ

The second most prestigious law firm also does university recruitment. Most of their associates have participated in the law firm's summer program at some point. Wachtell Lipton recruits from the law schools in Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, NYU, Yale, Stanford, and Chicago. Most of their attorneys come from Columbia University and then from NYU. There are less than 20 attorneys from each of the other law schools.

There isn't as much recruitment information from this law firm. That being said, over 100 of their professionals come from Columbia University (to include the Law School). A similar number of professionals come from Harvard. A lot of professionals also came from Cornell and Chicago University: over 70 and 60 respectively.

"All S&C Lawyers progress according to their merits." They visit a variety of schools in the US and Canada, and their partners have come from "over 40 different law schools." Their 2017 schedule indicates that they visit job fairs and hire from many known Ivy League Schools. In their firm, there are over 100 Lawyers who have come from Columbia and New York University.

DAVIS POLK AND WARDWELL LLP

As is the case with other law firms mentioned thus far, most professionals attended Columbia University/Law School or NYU: around 140 have come from each. 56 professionals came from Cornell and 53 came from Georgetown. We have found testimonials from Kirkland & Ellis associates who talk about their experiences. The associates have graduated from places like the Columbia University's School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, George Washington University Law School, Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and the University of Michigan's Law School. Each of these law schools (also including the University of Chicago) have produced over 100 lawyers. Most of them come from Northwestern University (176), the University of Chicago (160), and Georgetown University (118).

Conclusion

In summary, Columbia University and New York University have been mentioned for most, if not all, the top 10 law firms. We have reached this conclusion by analyzing the numbers of lawyers from each university and by looking for information about recruitment and job fairs. Some law firms like Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz offer things like a summer program which a lot of their associates have attended prior to being hired. All in all, the top 10 law firms show significant interest in hiring Ivy League Schools and the highlights are found in the attached document.

Overview

The top 11-20 law firms frequently hire form Harvard, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, Columbia, NYU, and Cornell. All firms except Quinn Emmanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP typically hire summer associates in addition to lateral. Most firms also run recruiting campaigns at the school from which the frequently hire. For some firms, information regarding exact number of hires was not available. In such cases, schools are listed from most to least frequently hired from.
