Decline In International Travel: Video Press Coverage

We were able to find five video pieces concerning the decline of international travel to the United States. One video came from CNN, two from CBS (a metropolitan affiliate and its national network), and two from CGTN. The pieces' consensus is that Donald Trump’s travel ban negatively impacted travel to the United States.

Methodology

We began our inquiry with a search of video sites (e.g., YouTube); news sites (e.g., CNN and CBS); and news archival databases (e.g., the Internet Archive). On each site, we filtered our search to cover the specified timeline of 2014-2017. While we were able to find relevant material meeting the project specification, the original broadcast date of the videos was 2017. We expect this since Donald Trump signed the Executive Order initiating the travel bans in January 2017.

“Travel Industry Feeling Impact of Trump Travel Ban”

This 2017 video from CNN discusses the impact of Donald Trump’s travel bans. The video cites data from travel websites (e.g., Kayak.com) that indicated interest in travel to the United States had dropped precipitously.

“Study: International Tourism on Decline Since Trump Became President”

This 2017 video from CBS Los Angeles indicates that overall tourism to the United States declined by 16% compared to the same period during the previous year. Additionally, Los Angeles had been hit especially hard by the decline in tourism.

“Trump Travel Ban to Reshape Global Tourism, with US Losing”

This 2017 video from CGTN discusses California’s message of openness at the world’s largest tourism trade fair. The video mentions data from the UN’s world tourism body that indicates the US lost $185 million in tourist revenue in a single month.

“Travel Ban Uncertainty Hurts US Airlines and Tourism”

This 2017 video from CBS relates data from The Washington Post concerning the airline industry’s loss of $185 million in bookings from Trump’s travel ban. The video discusses Trump’s meeting with airline CEOs after the issuance of the travel ban.

“Tamar Jacoby Explains What Trump’s Travel Ban Mean for Tourism, Travel Industries”

This 2017 video from CGTN involves an interview with the president and CEO of ImmigrationWorks USA, Tamar Jacoby. Ms. Jacoby discusses the original travel ban, the updated version, and what it means to immigrants.

The Travel Promotion Act: Video Press Coverage

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To find video news coverage discussing President Obama's signing the travel promotion act into law, the research team searched through credible news networks including CNN, CBS News, Bloomberg, US Newswire, Reuters, USA Today, NBC News, ABC News, and others. We found only news coverage not included within the requested timeline. We found that the Travel Promotion act was signed in 2010 and most of the video news coverage dated 2010-2012.
The team searched for videos through video-sharing websites such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion. The team could only find one video that could be included within the timeline requested. Finally, we went on to social media to search for videos, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds, but couldn't find any related videos.
Because there wasn't enough video coverage within the requested time frame, we searched for press coverage that discussed the topic. We again searched through credible news networks, this time for press releases. Unfortunately, most press releases were not within the requested timeline. We did, however, find four additional news articles that discussed the topic and were within the timeline.
