Introduction

This research provides information on the interests of US teens. The study focuses on identifying the most liked subjects or lessons by the students prioritizing afterhours subjects that are not taught in the school curricula. Information specific to US teens aged between 13 to 16 years was limited. Therefore, we have extended the scope of the project to include all high school students.

i. Performing Arts

  • A survey conducted to show classes/lessons students liked the most indicates that many liked performing arts as their most preferred subject. Performing arts such as AP choirs, music, and dance were the most liked in performing arts with 71.4%, 69.7%, and 69.6%, respectively. Other top performing arts are AP dance, Orchestra, band, and theater.
  • Another survey conducted on LinkedIn showed that performing arts was the second most liked subject coming second after arts and design. In this survey performing arts was liked by 61% of the respondent surveyed. In terms of gender, males liked performing arts more than females with 64% and 55%.
  • According to a survey by Business News, music and arts appeared at rank 6 most liked with 7% of the total votes.

ii. Art and Design

  • In a survey conducted to analyze what students liked the most, art and design came second, where drawing had 68% of the respondent who liked it most, graphic design had 64.7%, painting 64.1%, and advanced drawing 63.2%. Other top liked art and design lessons are advanced graphics and architectural drawing.
  • Another survey conducted on LinkedIn indicated that art and design was the most liked lesson by high school students. Art and design were ranked at the top, with 64% of respondents preferring them. In this study, performing arts followed art and design closely, with 61% of the respondents liking them.

iii. Computer Science and Engineering

  • A survey conducted to determine the subject and lesson liked the most by high school students found that learners in the third-place liked Computer Science and Engineering. Computer Science was the most liked in this category with 60.9%, followed by Engineering with 57.1% and programming with 56.1%.
  • Another study conducted on LinkedIn indicated that Computer Science and Engineering was ranked in the third position with 54%. Art and design were ranked at the top in this survey, followed by performing arts.
  • According to statistics provided by the Business News, Science is indicated to be at the fourth position with 14%. In this survey, Social studies, Maths, and English were shown to be liked most by the students than Science.

iv. Gym

  • A study conducted on what subjects students liked greatly showed that 8% of the surveyed respondents liked the gym. According to Business News, the gym was at position five. Business News ranked Social Studies at the top with 34% of the total votes of the respondents, followed by Maths with 18% of the respondents surveyed. The English language followed in third place with 14%, and lastly, Business News listed Sciences as the fourth position, but it had the equal liking as English.

v. Foreign language

  • Research shows that subjects and lessons liked the most by US teens, foreign languages is at the top of the list. German was the most preferred by students with 48.9%, followed by Spanish with 40.8% of the respondent surveyed, and French came as the third most liked foreign language in the United States by the high school teens. Studies have shown advantages when teens learn another foreign language. According to ACTFL, an organization representing language administrators and educators, some benefits are improved cognitive skills such as positive attitudes towards people and new language, the correlation between languages, and benefits at higher academic achievements.

Research Strategy

The research provided information on the interest of US teens. The research team focused on high school students since information specific to US teens aged 13-16 years was unavailable. The study identified the high school students' most liked subjects or lessons, prioritizing those subjects not taught in class as per the school curriculum. A brief description of the overall interest followed for every liked subject was identified, showing various statistics of the number of students who liked the subject. Further, the study illustrated more details on the preference of a particular subject based on gender. The research leveraged reputable and publicly available resources such as Business News and LinkedInprovided to provide a detailed analysis. Surveys conducted included a combination of subjects taught in the class and those outside the class curriculum. We chose only those that met the criteria of "classes that are not taught as part of school curriculum."
