How many in-patient surgeries were performed in the US by year during 2015, 2016, and 2017?
While there is no published information in the public domain regarding the total number of surgeries performed during the last three years, we were able to obtain data from that could be helpful. In 2009, 48 million surgeries were performed in the United States. In 2014, approximately 51.4 million surgeries total were performed in the United States. The available information in 2017 only included the 23 million ambulatory surgeries that occurred. Each year, approximately 234 million surgeries are performed throughout the world.
Below you'll find an outline of our research methodology to better understand why the total number of surgeries for 2015, 2016, and 2017 is not available.
Methodology
An exhaustive search of several databases and publicly published sources of data was unsuccessful in procuring the total number of inpatient surgeries performed during 2015, 2016, and 2017. The information has not been made available to the public at this time. Several sources provide data regarding the surgeries performed in many countries, including the type and total, but the information was not provided for the most recent years.
One source does provide surgical estimates for each year until the year 2030. However, this data exists behind a $995 paywall.
Helpful findings
Information from the years 2009, 2014, and 2017 was available, providing some insights that may be beneficial.
1. In 2009, there were 48 million inpatient surgeries performed. According to Stanford Health Care, some of the most frequently performed were cardiovascular system surgeries at 7.3 million,
2. In 2014, 51.4 million surgeries total were performed in the United States. Some of the most frequently performed surgeries include arteriography and angiocardiography at 2.4 million, Cesarean sections at 1.3 million, cardiac catheterizations at 1 million, endoscopy of small intestine at 1.1 million, and endoscopy of large intestine at 499000.
3. There were 23 million ambulatory surgeries performed in 2017. No further details were available, nor was the total number of surgeries performed throughout the year.
4. There are estimated 234 million major surgeries performed globally each year. This refers to incidents where the patient receives both general anesthesia and respiratory support. This means 1 out of every 25 people will have such a procedure each year. Of the major surgeries performed every year, 60 million are due to a traumatic injury and approximately 30 million are performed to treat cancer. It should be noted, however, that this number likely under represents the true total due to difficulty obtaining accurate information.
Conclusion
The total number of inpatient surgeries and outpatient for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 has not been published with the public domain at the present time. However, the total number of inpatient surgeries in 2009 was 48 million, the total inpatient surgeries in 2014 was 51.4 million, and the number of ambulatory surgeries in 2017 was 23 million. The estimated number of surgeries performed throughout the world each year is 234 million.
