Research Strategy:

To obtain the United States market size and growth we first searched for pre-compiled information in market research. We found multiple market research reports that contained the information for the United States, but they were behind paywalls. Adroit Market Research, Market Watch, Market Research News, and Transparency Market Research, all contained the breakdown by the United States along with all major markets. They also broke this information down by ice cream maker type.

We also consulted the International Ice Cream Consortium, the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, IceCream.org, and the International Dairy Foods Association, to see if they released any relevant statistics or information regarding the market. Through this research, we did discover the most successful market in the United States, but no hard figures that would let us calculate the market share.

Finally, we went to Business Wire and PR Newswire to see if any relevant press releases were available that might state the market, or provide a path to research further. During this research, we did find a press release from Wayfair that stated ice cream makers are becoming increasingly popular.

With the needed statistics and data hidden behind paywalls, we triangulated the information using a proxy for the market share for the United States. We were able to obtain the worldwide and United States revenue figures for small kitchen appliances. By dividing the United States share by the worldwide share (6,851,000,000/97,496,000,000= .07), we were able to get a 7% market share for the United States. It made sense that a 7% market share of small kitchen appliances could translate to a 7% share of the ice cream maker market as well. With the total global ice cream maker market being $1,039,500,000, 7% of that would be $72,973,000, making that the estimated market share for the United States.

Top Five Ice Cream Maker Companies by Annual Revenue (2018)

To figure the market share for the top five companies we used the statistics for the global small kitchen appliance market, as it was the only consistent number we could obtain for all five companies, due to different reporting methods on annual reports and some companies not being required to publish their annual report. To obtain the market share we divided company revenue by the world small kitchen appliance market share in revenue.
  • Hamilton Beach had $743.1 Million in revenue in 2018, and .79% market share of the global small kitchen appliance market. (743.1/94,381= .0079)

Research Strategy:

To obtain the top five selling ice cream maker brands, we first researched popular ice cream makers. We consulted Foodal, The Spruce Eats, and Good Housekeeping. We then combined the lists and researched revenue for each company. To obtain annual revenue we first tried to locate their annual report. If annual revenues were not publicly available we used the reported estimated annual revenue from Hoover's. As a last resort, if we could not locate the annual revenue from either source, we used Owler. With companies all having different ways they report their annual revenue it was discovered that none reported a breakdown of just their ice cream maker revenue. To make the results consistent, we used the revenue for their small kitchen appliances with larger companies and the total revenue for companies that primarily produce small kitchen appliances.

Obtaining the market share became tricky because of the lack of data. Again, to remain consistent, we used total annual revenues. The one number we could use that was consistent across all categories was the world market share of small kitchen appliances. It was impossible to use the United States figure for this, as not every company had an annual report that was accessible. Also, most companies broke up their revenue by North America, making the United States calculations impossible. With the lack of publicly available information, the global small kitchen appliance statistics were the only logical and consistent proxy data to use. We were able to obtain the forecasted revenues from Statista for 2019. Considering all the revenues that were reported were from 2018, we made the assumption that the CAGR of 3.3% would most likely apply for 2018 also and used a calculator to obtain the 2018 worldwide annual revenue for small kitchen appliances.

It is of note that there were multiple paid market research reports that claimed to break down this market not only by ice cream makers but by the United States market share. Market Reseach News, Market Watch, and NBC29 all had paid research available.
