I'd like a list of companies in the SF bay area employing 5+ Scala developers.
Hello! Thanks for your question about companies in the SF bay area employing 5+ Scala developers. After an extensive search on many corporate websites, we were not able to locate a preexisting figure regarding companies with 5+ Scala developers. This is because corporations, especially large ones, use more generic titles for their employees. They include Scala developers in the generic category "Software developers" or "Software engineers." While there is no pre-existing information to fully answer your question, we've used the available data to pull together key findings: (1) Lists of San Francisco's largest tech employers and research on companies that have job openings for Scala developers can be used to assume the presence of Scala developers or the least number of them in a company. (2) The yearly conference of SF Scala, called Scala By the Bay, will be of great help in searching the presence of Scala developers in a company.
Below you'll find an outline of our research methodology to better understand why information you've requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into our findings.
methodology
An extensive search of websites like Forbes, Glassdoor, Indeed, Linkedin, Google Jobs, Yahoo Jobs and many direct corporate websites revealed no definite figures as to the number Scala developers for companies in San Francisco. This is because corporations, especially large ones, use more generic titles for their employees. They don't call a Scala developer a "Scala Developer," but "Software developer" or "Software engineer." As an example is the Data Monsters company. In their profile, they listed Scala first in their list of computer languages and 50+ data engineers but do not provide Scala specific numbers. It is therefore, not possible to definitively prove even with triangulation that a company has 5 Scala Developers.
Since searching for specific number of Scala developers was fruitless, we searched for San Francisco's largest tech employers and for companies that have job openings for Scala developers. From this findings, we can make assumptions on the presence of Scala developers or the least number Scala developers in a company. For example, we can assume that a large company, with hundreds or thousands of tech employees, has more than 5 Scala developers in the mix of many developers. Or if companies have 4 positions open, they must have at least 5 developers.

Suggested changes to the search parameters
Throughout our search, it became apparent that a list of companies with 5+ Scala developers is not available. But if you're able to loosen this criteria and request a list of the largest 15 companies in the San Francisco Bay area that currently employ or are looking to employ Scala Developer(s), we may be able to provide this list.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, after searching extensively on many direct corporate websites, a direct answer to your question is not publicly available because corporations, especially large ones, use more generic titles for their employees; they don't call a Scala developer a "Scala Developer," but "Software developer" or "Software engineer." However, we have learned that a list of the largest 15 companies in the San Francisco Bay area that currently employ or are looking to employ Scala Developer(s) is available and that would likely give you a better basis to work from. If you’d like to continue research on the that topic, just let us know!
