How many hotels are there in APAC region?
Hello! Thank you for your request to determine how many hotels there are in the APAC region. The short version is that there are currently an estimated 40,019 hotels, for a total of 3,745,000 rooms, in the APAC region. Newly constructed hotels in the APAC region provides more rooms than in the past, averaging 231.46 rooms per hotel. There are currently 2,559 hotels, for a total of 592,299 rooms, under construction in the APAC region.
METHODOLOGY
I have scoured the Internet for articles, papers and statistics related to this subject.
From the research conducted it has become apparent that the benchmark by which this subject is regularly measured is by amount of hotel rooms in regions. From all the data available on this subject, I endeavored to calculate the amount of actual hotels in the APAC (Asia-Pacific) region.
FINDINGS
The most recent data on this subject comes from an article on TNooz, citing information from STR Global (a hotel benchmarking organization). This source states that there are currently 187,000 hotels globally, with 17.5 million rooms. From this data we see that the average hotel in the world has:
17,500,000 / 187,000 = 93.58 rooms. Please note that averages will be used in these calculations, since we are dealing with an enormous data set, and an average on such a scale should serve to provide a statistically accurate estimate.
According to World Property Global, the APAC region comprises 21.4% of the global room inventory. If we apply this percentage to the most recent number of rooms, globally, we see:
17,500,000 * 0.214 = an estimated 3,745,000 hotel rooms in the APAC region. Now if we apply the global average of 93.58 rooms per hotel, we see:
3,745,000 / 93.58 = an estimated 40,019 hotels in the APAC region.
It should be insightful to note that new constructions of hotels lean towards higher room numbers, as stated by Hotel Management, once again citing data from STR Global. According to this source, in 2016 there were 2,559 hotels being constructed in the APAC region, for a total number of 592,299 rooms. This gives us an average of 231.46 rooms per newly constructed hotel in this region.
