Historical Global AI and ML Ops Spend

Key Takeaways

Introduction

  • In our research, we have provided information about the historical and future sizes of the global AI and ML Ops spending. We have also provided insights into our calculations, assumptions, and conclusions about the concerned industry in the Research Strategy section below. We have provided the required information about the historical and future global AI and ML spend in the attached spreadsheet.

Global AI Historical and Future Spend

  • The global spending on artificial intelligence for the required years is provided below:
    • 2010: $4.964 billion (calculated)
    • 2015: $7.077 billion (calculated)
    • 2020: $50.1 billion
    • 2025: $232 billion
    • 2030: $428.73 billion (calculated)
    • 2035: $792.28 billion (calculated).

Global MLOps Historical and Future Spend

  • The global spending on MLOps for the required years is provided below:

Research Strategy

We found the global AI spending for 2020 and 2025 pre-compiled in the public domain. Using the value of the global AI spending in 2020 and the 2015 and 2020 total global revenue generated by AI ($126 billion and $892 billion, respectively) as provided by Statista as proxies, we were able to calculate an estimated figure for the 2015 global AI spend as $7.077 billion. Furthermore, we leveraged a CAGR Calculator to calculate the CAGR from 2026 to 2050 for the global AI spend, which gave 13.07%. Using the CAGR, we have calculated the 2030 and 2035 global AI spend as $428.73 billion and $792.28 billion, respectively.
After an exhaustive search through numerous industry reports, news publications and articles, research publications, and expert opinions, we were unable to find a pre-compiled value for the 2010 global AI spend. Also, we did not have enough AI-related industry statistics to calculate an estimated figure for the global AI spend in 2010. As a result, we have provided the closest resource found, which is the global 2011 and 2020

For the machine learning (ML) Ops sector, we identified a pre-compiled report, which provided the size of the MLOps industry for 2019 and 2025. Using this, we calculated the value for 2020 using a CAGR calculator as $525.29 million. We were unable to estimate values for the global MLOps industry for 2010, 2015, and 2035. This is due to the lack of pre-compiled industry reports, news publications, and articles, or research publications, containing such information. Also, all attempts to triangulate values for these three years proved abortive. There was not enough information about a proxy industry (such as the machine learning industry) to aid with this calculation.

We have provided the details of our calculation in the Triangulation section below.

Triangulation

  • To calculate the global spending on artificial intelligence for the concerned years:
    • According to IDC, global spending on artificial intelligence (AI) in 2020 was valued at $50.1 billion.
    • Statista opined that the total revenue generated by AI in 2015 and 2020 is $126 billion and $892 billion, respectively.
    • Using the figures above, the global AI spend for 2015 is calculated as thus: [($126 billion × $50.1 billion) ÷ $892 billion] = $7.077 billion.
    • According to an industry report by Emerj, the global big data space was valued at $61.16 billion in 2020 at a CAGR of 26% between 2011 and 2020.
    • Using a CAGR Calculator, the 2010 big data industry is seen to be worth $6.06 billion.
    • Using the figures above, the global AI spend for 2010 is calculated as thus: [($6.06 billion × $50.1 billion) ÷ $61.16 billion] = $4.964 billion.
    • Also, a LinkedIn publication revealed that by 2025, the global AI spend would have reached $232 billion and $5 trillion by 2050.
    • Using a CAGR Calculator to calculate the CAGR from 2026 to 2050 gives 13.07%.
    • Using the CAGR (13.07%), we have calculated the global AI spend for 2030 and 2035 as $428.73 billion and $792.28 billion, respectively.
  • To calculate the global spending on MLOps for the concerned years:
  • According to Cognilytica, the global MLOps market will be worth $4 billion by 2025. The industry was worth $350 million in 2019, giving a CAGR of about 50%.
  • The industry's size for 2020 is calculated using a CAGR of 50% as $525.29 million.
  • The global ML industry is predicted to grow at a CAGR of approximately 27% from 2020-2030. Assuming that the MLOps sector adopts the same CAGR. Using the 2020 MLOps industry market size ($525.29 million) and a CAGR calculator, the 2030 MLOps industry size is calculated as $5.734 billion.
