What are the historic, current, and future sales of the retractable screen door and window industry in the United States?

Hello! Thanks for your question about the historic, current, and future sales of the retractable screen door and window industry in the United States. The short version is that after searching extensively through industry and market reports, the sites of the top manufacturers, repositories of company data like Owler, and Google Trends, we’ve determined that the information you requested is not publicly available because retractable screen doors and windows are a niche market which has not received much attention in the wider world, and the reports which might contain the answer are all privately owned and expensive to obtain. However, we were able to learn enough details to give an educated guess about the size of the market and its growth. Below you will find a deep dive of my research and methodology.
METHODOLOGY
We presented the key players in the manufacturing of retractable screen doors and windows in a previous report, so in this report, we focused entirely on historic, current, and future sales in the US.
We started with a general search for industry and marketing reports on retractable screen doors and windows. We discovered quickly that retractable screen doors are a small niche sector of the wider screen door market, which in turn is a small sector of the overall doors and windows market. Moreover, while there are several reports available from QYResearch, Orbis Research, and the MRS Research Group, each of these were hidden behind expensive paywalls and, unusually for such reports, did not even include the US market revenue in the abstracts. We next searched IBISWorld, normally an excellent source for industry reports with enough information in the abstracts for us to triangulate the answer, but they did not have a report on screen doors and/or windows in the US at all, let alone on the retractable screen door market. Valuation Resources, also normally an excellent site for finding industry reports, likewise had no entries for "screen doors" or "screen windows."
Our next step would normally be to attempt to size the market based on the revenue of its largest players. However, the three largest manufacturers of retractable screen doors--ODL, Larson, and Snavely Forest Products--each manufacture far more than just that one product. A general search for manufacturers of retractable screen doors and/or windows shows that this market consists of many small, local companies rather than a few big chains. We were able to find only one, Stoett, which had a profile on Owler with an estimated annual revenue ($7.4 million). This was insufficient to triangulate the answer.
Since 81% of shoppers do research online before making a purchase, we attempted to determine the ratio of inquiries about doors to that of retractable screen doors. When we compared "retractable screen door" to "door" as a search term in the US on Google Trends, the term "door" was so overwhelmingly more popular that "retractable screen door" showed up only as a blip in comparison. This means that retractable screen doors are searched for less than a hundredth as often as doors in general. While a comparison of "retractable screen door" and "screen door" was more useful, there is no publicly available report or abstract of a report that tells us the size of the US screen door market or even the global screen door market.
As a result of the above, we were unable to provide a solid triangulation of the answer. Our presentation below is only a step above guesswork.
USEFUL FINDINGS
According to the abstract of research done by the Fedonia Group, the total US market for doors and windows in general was $27.2 billion in 2016 and is growing at a modest rate of 4.8% annually. We know that the retractable screen door market is far less than 1% of the total door market, so let us set the boundary at 0.1% to 0.5%. This means that the potential market for retractable screen doors and windows in the US is between $27.2 million and $136 million.
Secondly, we know based on Google Trends that interest in retractable screen doors is on an annual cycle, peaking in May of each year. We also know that interest in retractable screen doors in May 2008 was only 60% of that in May 2017, and that May 2016 was at 93%. If this interest correlates to sales, then we would expect sales in 2008 to be 64.5% (60/93) of that in 2016, so between $17.5 million and $87.7 million. This suggests a growth of 5.67% CAGR, which is very close to the 4.8% CAGR of the door industry in general.
We emphasize again that this is essentially our best guess, and is based on too few data points to be solid. Nevertheless, without purchasing an expensive industry report, it is the best estimate available.
POSSIBLE CONTINUED RESEARCH
Without knowing more about your goal, it is difficult to suggest a valid course of research which might assist you further. A deeper dive into one or more of the companies which specialize in retractable screen doors could be fruitful, especially if we had some additional direction on what you were looking for.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, after searching extensively through industry and market reports, the sites of the top manufacturers, repositories of company data like Owler, and Google Trends, we’ve determined that the information you requested is not publicly available because retractable screen doors and windows are a niche market which has not received much attention in the wider world, and the reports which might contain the answer are all privately owned and expensive to obtain. However, we have provided an educated guess in the form of a range and likely growth of this sector. If you’d like to continue research on any of the other topics I’ve outlined above, just let us know!
Thanks for using Wonder!
